Joe Moses leads a Sportscover/Bioracer 1-2 in the City Road Club Summer Road Race on Sunday

54 riders took to the start line for this weekend’s 2,3,4 event on the Little Weighton Circuit, headquartered at Newbald Village Hall. The HQ’s remote location caused a last minute adrenaline rush for several riders who didn’t realise how long 2.5 miles takes when it’s all up hill and the peloton are waiting on the line for them to arrive!

With the race underway, it was on the second of 8 laps when 5 riders broke away from the bunch. After 35 mins of racing, the 5 had grown to 10 riders with a 30 second lead and the peloton losing impetus. This was the key move of the race and 8 of those 10 would eventually take placings on the finish line – Joe Moses, Ashley Brown, Sam Ward, Steven Guymer, Chris Daddy, Richard Moore, Rob Watkinson and Peter Fielding-Smith.

The first rider to be dropped by that group was Matt Manakee on lap 4, the high pace – 27 miles in the first 56 mins – taking it’s toll.

Next to succumb was Dave Sowerby on lap 6 after 90 mins of racing, by which time the remaining 8 had split into smaller groups, with the eventual first 3 placed riders leading with a small gap of 16 secs. With the pressure still on at the head of the race, by the time the bell lap came, the remainder of the peloton were at 2m 55s.

The Sportscover duo of Ash Brown and Joe Moses made the most of their numerical advantage over the last lap to open a clear lead over lone Dirtwheels’ rider Sam Ward to cross the line after 52 miles of racing in 2hr and 05min.
