Podiums in Spain for Brits as riders from ‘Achieve Northside Skinnergate’ and others travel to Spain to participate in Volta Ciclisa Series

Three riders from Achieve Northside Skinnergate travelled to Spain last week to participate in two races of the Volta Ciclisa Series as part of a block of training ahead of the 2015 season. Both races also featured good British peloton representation with riders from Neon Velo, Catford Banks Equipe and Raleigh-GAC.

In the first, the Volta Ciclisa Xabia, the team were active throughout with their in form rider Ben Hetherington making the race winning move of 10 riders which built up a lead of almost two minutes. With the race concluding on a 3km finish climb, this providing enough of a buffer for the group of ten to contest the race victory. Ben responded well to a number of attacked from the home teams eventually finishing a fantastic 3rd, taking the U23 competition in the process.

The second race, the Volta Ciclisa Altea was a big circuit rather than multiple laps, taking in the biggest climbs in the area, the Col de Rates (back side from Tarbena), Castel to Castel and the Col de Rates Official (famous as a professional testing ground), before a fast descent to the finish in Altea Le Velle.

Attacking from the gun, Ben once again clearly in great form forced the winning move that eventually swelled to 12 riders on the first climb of the day, the group established a lead of two mins on what was left of the main group. Going into the final climb the group splintered under pressure from local riders with Ben cresting the summit in a chase group of 8, to eventually finish 10th overall.

The team continue to prepare for the 2015 season where they aim to continue their development at a National level in the UK, through a training camp in Mallorca before the first key event of the season, the Chorley GP as part of the Elite Road Series.
