Feature – Tom Neale
Tom in winning form in 2015 for Catford CC
1. When will you start your road season and what will be the first race?
Tom: The team is quite relaxed towards what races we’re doing at the beginning of the year but I’ll most probably start around mid March again this year and attempt to defend my win at the Roy Thame Cup!
2. What races will be your targets for 2016 and why?
Tom: I’d really like to be going well for the two one day UCI races in the UK this year. The Cicle Classic is quite local to me and it’s nice when friends and family come out watch. The Beaumont Trophy is a race I can go OK in and it would be good to break into the top ten.
3. How will you spend the time on the bike between now and your first race in training?
Tom: This year I’m renting a villa in Spain with my girlfriend so will be here for seven weeks. I’ll be making the most of the good weather so will do plenty of miles but will also be doing some top end efforts to mix it up.
4. What was your favourite Xmas present?
Tom: My favourite Christmas present was a watch my girlfriend gave me.
5. When it rains, which its doing a lot right now, is it turbo time or wrap up and get wet?
Tom: As I’ll be in Spain for quite some time, I’m very much hoping that it doesn’t rain too much! When I’m at home, I don’t mind riding in the rain. I just make sure that I’m plenty warm enough on the ride and then a little bit of water isn’t much of a concern.
6. If you could do any race in the world including the best ones in the world etc, what would it be and why?
Tom: It would have to be the one of the spring classics! They’ve always been my favourite races to watch and it definitely be a brilliant experience to be able to compete in one.
7. What piece of food can you not do without where ever you are on the road during the season!
Tom: Wouldn’t say I can’t do without it but I almost always have a big lot of scrambled eggs and toast as my pre race breakfast.
8. What is your favourite music track when warming up for a race or on the turbo?
Tom: There isn’t really one specific track but when warming up I like stuff with a good beat and tempo so I can get hyped up before the off.
9. If given the option, would you prefer normal brakes or disc brakes on your road bike?
Tom: I’ve never had any issue with stopping with normal brakes before so don’t really feel like I’d need to move over to discs.
10. What’s the spec of your race bike for 2016 and your favourite bits on it?
Tom: This year the team will be riding the new Planet X EC-130-E bikes, with Ultegra groupsets and Vision wheels. None of the team have ridden one yet but from what I’ve seen they look really good.
