Feature – Peter Hitt Q & A
1. When will you start your road season and what will be the first race?
Peter: I’ve started to wind into it a little bit already with 3rd place in a round of the Imperial Winter Series. My season starts properly at the Perf’s Pedal Race on February 14th.
2. What races will be your targets for 2016 and why?
Peter: The one I’ve really got my eye on at the moment is the Les Ingman Memorial Road Race – last year was my first attempt at something that long and hilly, so I rode pretty conservatively. I still finished 13th though and I’m several kilos lighter than last year- hopefully I can contend a bit more this time.
3. How will you spend the time on the bike between now and your first race in training?
Peter: It’s a bit of a mix – I tend to do long miles throughout the season as I just enjoy riding my bike, but I’m starting to do more and more top end efforts in training. To be honest I just do whatever my coach tells me!
4. What was your favourite Xmas present?
Peter: My sister got me 1989 by Taylor Swift, that was pretty good…
5. When it rains, which its doing a lot right now, is it turbo time or wrap up and get wet?
Peter: It depends on the ride – if it’s intervals, I tend to be on the turbo anyway as there are no interruptions. If it’s a long 4-5 hour ride, I’ll usually grit my teeth and get on with it, but if it’s seriously grim, I just jump on the turbo. There’s no point making yourself ill for a week just so you could do a few extra miles outdoors …
6. If you could do any race in the world including the best ones in the world etc, what would it be and why?
Peter: It would have to be Paris-Roubaix. It’s a proper hard-man’s race, I don’t think I’ve ever watched it and thought “that guy didn’t deserve to win”. I love that.
7. What piece of food can you not do without where ever you are on the road during the season!
Peter: It’s a tie between Oreos and Nutella sandwiches… On the healthier side of things, 9-Bar is one of my favourite on-the-bike brands. Healthy, packed with calories, and pretty tasty.
8. What is your favourite music track when warming up for a race or on the turbo?
Peter: Bleed It Out by Linkin Park- old but gold.
9. If given the option, normal brakes or discs?
Peter: Undecided – I love the potential performance gains of disc brakes, but they definitely need refining before they are safe enough to use in a peloton.
10. What’s the spec of your race bike for 2016 and your favourite bits on it?
Peter: This year I’m on a Bottecchia T1 Tourmalet with an Ultegra groupset. As is the way with aero bikes, it’s not the lightest build but it’s super fast! My favourite bits are probably my Bontrager Aeolus 3 wheels (forget discs, tubeless is the future!) and my Quarq Power meter.
