Report: VC Venta Summer Critérium 1
Sunday 29th May | By Graham RobinsÂ
Will Harper from the Excel Pedal Heaven Academy won the first of the local club VC Venta’s summer crits held at the South Winchester Park and Ride. He managed to hold off Andy Pickett (Eden Veranda Racing) right on the line and Jason White (Ride 24/7) in a late attack with only a handful of laps to go.
The close racing at the off road safe circuit provided some very fast and close racing in the sunny conditions. In the feature race it took half the race distance of one hour before there was a definitive break but as soon as the ten riders established a gap it very quickly went out over a chase group.
The ten leaders worked hard to maintain their lead and at the 50minute mark they caught the chasing group and after a lap or two finally they all managed to get by. It was at this point the race broke again and quickly Harper, Pickett and White took advantage of a hesitation in the bunch to attack. Harry Veale (Cycleworks.co.uk) was leading the chase but with just four laps to go the trio on the front did not look like they were going to be caught.
At the bell Harper, Pickett and White were still all together as it stayed this way until they exited the tight bottom bend and Harper and Pickett dropped White. The two now sprinted to the line with Harper taking it by about a wheel.
The earlier 3rd cat race provided some very fast racing and it only took 15miutes of the fifty before a group had formed at the front. Originally seven riders had slipped off the front of the bunch with another rider trying to get across the gap but that was too much for him and he slowly was swept up by the chasing group.
The group was soon whittled down to five and they were slowly closing in the back of the bunch and at the 35minutes point they managed to pass the second group on the road. The five riders leading the race were eventual winner Ed Slot (Sotonia CC), Paddy Brown (Eden Veranda Racing), Tim Costello (GS Vecchi), Austin Head (VC Revolution) and Matthew Buckley (Abbotts Ann Cycles).
Five women took to the course for a 35mins plus 5 lap race and despite attacks the race mainly stayed together until the finish. At the bell they were together with Lizzy Campbell (BJW) on the front but as the group came back into view it was Kara Perryman (Team Montezuma Hargroves) held a slight lead over Caitlin Peters (i-Team.CC) but Peters was stronger up the rise and claimed the win on the line.
Earlier in the morning the fourth cat riders provided the action but as with most fourth cat races they whole bunch remained together for the entire 35mins of racing with Red Walters (Sotonia CC) claiming the win.
