Sam Allen (PedalOn) was the winner of the final round of the Wessex League leading almost from start to finish in a near faultless ride as he rode away from Joe Hickerton (Spokes BPC Racing). Allen’s team mate Kean Wytrykowski finally made in onto the podium this season after a season long try.
The racing was held at the Dalton Barracks Abingdon on a very cold and frosty day. Once to top layer of grass was removed in previous races it left a hard frozen surface which caught out many riders as they tumbled to the ground on the twisty course set out by the Take 3 Tri club. The lap was partly grass airfield infield, a muddy 4×4 course and a strip of 10 tonnes of sand , which had frozen overnight so it was in the most part ride able.
On the opening lap Allen eased his way to the front taking with him Hickerton and Tom Budden (Sotonia CC), behind these three were a duo of PedalOn riders Wytrykowski and Jamie Norfolk. Picking his way through riders was James Allaway (Cannondale Racing) and on the second lap he had risen up to sixth place.
There were no changes of places on lap three but lap four saw Wytrykowski finally get past Budden but he was 1min 20secs behind Allen and only 14secs ahead of Norfolk. The remainder of the race did not see any changes in the leading group of six and Allen was a clear winner from Hickerton by 29secs at the finish. Wytrykowski took the final podium place albeit 1min 39secs adrift.
Kara Perryman (Hargroves Ridley Montezumas) was a clear winner in the women’s race as the junior was not being caught this week as she pulled out a lead of over a minute on the second lap. In second place was Perryman’s team mate and veteran Helen Pattinson followed by Sarah Barber and Susan Parker (North Hants RC). On lap three Barber succumbed to the slippery conditions and in doing so collected a puncture which put paid to her challenge for a podium spot.
Philip Roach (Team Jewson /MI Racing) showed a clean pair of heels in the vet 50+ race as he made light of the course winning from Wessex League regulars Kevin Holloway (GS Vecchi) and Dave McMullen (Cotswold Veldrijden). Dan Guest (Cotswolds Veldrijden) once again was too strong in the vet40+race winning by over a minute from Jason Painton (Rides On Air) with Tim Jones (Condors CC) claiming a podium spot for the second week running.
Riding for his new team PedalOn Callum Macleod was too strong in the junior race claiming top spot from the Hargroves Ridley Montezumas trio of Will and Charlie Cooper and Barney Clacy with Edward Gronbech (Oxford City RC) taking fifth.
