Report: Beaumont Trophy

Pete Williams bluffed his way into the box seat at Beaumont Trophy at came away the victor in a two up sprint with James Gullen

It was the race of the year so far. Brutal, hot and unpredictable and won by Peter Williams on his Boardman Bike. Whilst the start of the race was active, the finale was a hotbed of attacking racing and the only downside was not being able to sit behind it and watch it all because what I did see, the riders gave us an exciting race.

One that gets die hard fans excited watching something so beautiful as groups race flat stick, their race at stake, attacking and chasing down the riders in front of them. It was the scene from heaven!

Under sunny skies, the 158 riders start what turned out to be a very brutal race – speaking of which, there was a crash a rider is said to have broken his collarbone. A speedy recovery we hope.

The race started as usual with a flurry of attacks that come to nothing until on the first lap, a move goes that the major teams were happy with and so fifteen riders go clear. These were Adria Moreno (Raleigh GAC), Peter Williams and Tom Stewart of One Pro, Steve Lampier and James Gullen of JLT Condor, Connor Swift and Jonny McEvoy of Madison Genesis, Andy Hawdon, Joey Walker of Team Wiggins, three young riders from GB, Bertie Newey (Metaltek Kuota) and Max Stedman and Harry Tanfield.

The leading group of 15 that was never caught ….

Behind, the gap to the peloton just exploded to six minutes until One Pro put the hammer down and saw a small chase group develop chasing the 15 after several other smaller groups failed to get across. Whilst the chase behind saw the gap tumble, in the break after only two laps on the Ryals circuit, Steve Lampier went solo and for a long long time, led the race well into the final lap of the small circuit.

By this time, the break was splitting as attacks after attacks came and went with Joey Walker one of the names prominent on race radio. Lampier was caught and soon the names of two riders came over race radio with a 75 metre lead, James Gullen and Peter Williams. The former had broken a long standing record by Bradley Wiggins the day before in a time trial and also, last month, won the RAS.

No surprise he was the one dragging the two along as Pete Williams laid out his bluff, work or we get caught and you (Gullen) get fifth or sixth.

It worked and Gullen tried a few digs but was not going to dislodge Williams who remembers a similar situation in 2008 with Rob Hayles and he wasn’t going to mess the chase for victory up. He didn’t and he outsprinted Gullen whilst William’s teammate Tom Stewart beat one of the young and up coming GB riders Matt Bostock for the final place on the podium.

So much about the race was great – the nature of the way the riders raced it, the number of GB teenagers who not only made the break but chased the win and of course the weather! If the British Road Race Championship is anything like this race, it will be sensational!

It was a strong chase group but it wasn’t closing the gap to the break

Steve Lampier did a great solo effort but the race was probably 10k to long….

The peloton was pretty much forgotten about despite only being four or five minutes down

Peter Williams and Tom Stewart lead what is left of the break, not much, through to start the final lap. Joey Walker promptly attacked them after going past the camera….
