Tour de France: Stage 19
After two podium places, Edvald Boasson Hagen gets his stage win as he solos to victory on stage 19 of the Tour de France
169 riders started stage 19 at Embrun and there were a lot of skirmishes to make the day’s breakaway before a group of 20 escaped; Jan Bakelants (AG2R-La Mondiale), Daniele Bennati (Movistar), Bauke Mollema (Trek-Segafredo), Ben Swift (UAE), Rudy Molard (FDJ), Michael Albasini and Jens Keukeleire (Orica), Edvald Boasson Hagen (Dimension Data), Gianluca Brambilla (Quick Step), Robert Kiserlovski (Katusha), Thomas De Gendt and Tony Gallopin (Lotto-Soudal), Nikias Arndt (Sunweb), Julien Simon (Cofidis), Lilian Calmejane, Sylvain Chavanel and Romain Sicard (Direct Energie), Elie Gesbert, Romain Hardy and Pierre-Luc Périchon (Fortuneo-Oscaro).
It was soon clear that Sky, and the other teams, were happy for the breakaway to stay clear and they soon had as much as eight minutes and the gap was still growing. De Gendt celebrated his country’s (Belgium) national day by winning the intermediate sprint in Banon (km 136.5). Keukeleire did it as well, being the first of the 20 leading riders to launch an attack with 61km to go.
It was an unsuccessful one. Sicard, Gesbert and Kiserlovski rode away up the col du Pointu with less than 50km to go and more riders went on the offensive 21km before arriving in Salon-de-Provence.
Bakelants, Bennati, Albasini, Keukeleire, Boasson Hagen, De Gendt, Arndt, Chavanel and Gesbert used the crosswinds well with 17km to go and split the break in two and then 2.8km before the end, Boasson Hagen and Arndt took a roundabout on the right side while the seven other riders went left. Boasson Hagen profited from the little gap to create a bigger one and go solo to grab his third stage win at the Tour de France after he did it in Lisieux and Pinerolo for Team Sky in 2011.
Reactions:
Edvald Boasson Hagen: “This is fantastic. The team helped me a lot before the break went away. They controlled the peloton and on the climb, I was in a good position to follow the attacks. Within the front group, we worked really well together all day. Naturally, at the end, there were some attacks but I managed to close them down and ride quite smartly. I had studied the course and I knew I had to go right in that last roundabout. Afterwards, I managed to go solo and I was so happy when I crossed the line. I’ve been so close so many times. It’s really nice to finally get this victory for the team and for myself as well”.
Chris Froome: “I did a Hi5 to the devil because Didi is a legend of the Tour and it was one of those days for us, GC guys, in which we didn’t have to go full gas. After the Alps, we could regain some energy before digging deep again tomorrow. I was grateful for today’s transition stage, thanks for my teammates to control the race the way they did. The course of the time trial tomorrow suits me but for the stage win, I believe it’ll be for guys like Primoz Roglic or Tony Martin. I have to treat it like any TT I‘ve done before. I won’t take any big risk. I fear the crash more that the puncture because you can always change wheel but you can’t change legs. I’m in a fantastic position. I prefer this one than being second or third and having to make up time.”
Michael Matthews: “When we both had one stage win, it was already an amazing Tour. Warren had the jersey, we won another stage, then I had the jersey and Warren won another stage. It just kept getting better and better really. The last two nights since I got the jersey I really couldn’t sleep. I think maybe it affected my performances these last two days. But all our dreams have come true, especially for our team-mates, their dreams have come true as well. It’s something we’ve worked so hard for. It’s really special that all happens in the biggest race of the year.”
Warren Barguil: “It feels amazing to ride in the peloton with the polka dot jersey, less pressure and less stress about crashing or something like that because the job is done. I want to enjoy every moment until we reach Paris. We just have to ride the time trial in Marseille and soon we’ll be in Paris. My room-mate Michael Matthews and I woke up very early this morning. We discussed a lot about our dream. We share the same dream. What’s happening to us is really crazy. We’re smiling at this Tour! Had you told us before the Tour that we’d be here with two distinctive jerseys today, I would have said you’re mad.”
Nikias Ardnt: “There were a lot of strong guys in the front and when nine riders went clear, there was still some really tough competition with everybody going for the win. I took the right side of the roundabout and could take a small lead, but when the rider following me accelerated I couldn’t hold the wheel. We have four stage victories, two jerseys and now we have another second place. The atmosphere is great and I’m pleased to carry the momentum on for today’s stage.”
Daniele Bennati: “The first victory of the day was simply getting into the early break, because it was difficult in itself, and then beating the rest of the field was the other one. There were so many talented riders, and in such a finish, it’s sort of a lottery to snatch the right move and win. I tried to escape after the penultimate roundabout, but wasn’t able to open a gap, and then at the final one I took the left side, whereas the right-hand one was the shortest. Boasson Hagen had a 20, 30-meter advantage at the exit and it was impossible for me to bridge back.
“I’m annoyed, and it’s normal. I wanted so hard to dedicate a victory to the whole team, after all bad luck we’ve gone through in this Tour; also to Alejandro Valverde, whom I wish all the best with his recovery; and my son Francesco, who celebrated his birthday on Thursday. After Alejandro’s crash we tried to carry on and seek for the GC win with Nairo, yet he couldn’t recover well for the Tour after the efforts in the Giro. Refocusing our goals afterwards and go for stage wins when you see your top contender hasn’t got everything he’d like to is always hard. We tried, though; I did jump with 2km left last Tuesday after we made the front group into the crosswinds, but was caught. We didn’t have what was needed, but did everything we could.”
Thomas De Gendt: “We knew there were two possible scenarios today: let a small group take off and control the gap or join the break if it is large enough. It became the second option. It was not my intention to get in the break today, I thought I would have to pull in the peloton, but after a descent we got a gap. We all worked together and pretty soon we knew we would battle for the stage win. Sky did not give us an enormous advantage as AG2R had a rider in front with Bakelants and that could influence the team classification.”
“I knew whom I had to keep an eye on: Boasson Hagen, Chavanel and Keukeleire. They are dangerous in these kind of situations. I think none of us was very confident, also Boasson Hagen attacked and didn’t wait for the sprint. I felt that I had been in the break a few times before, but everybody is tired. I hope this was an extra push for me to get the Super Combativity Award, that would be a wonderful reward. Unfortunately the fifth place was the highest possible result for me today.”
Ben Swift: “My legs were really good and it feels like this week they are still getting better. My ambition was to aim for the sprint but also if there was going to be a group then I wanted to try and join them. I ended up in a really good group with 20 guys and when it became apparent we were going to stay away I tried to think about the finish.
I think I tried to play it a bit too smart.”
“In the past I suffered from putting in too much effort and being the first to start working. So today I tried to look after myself and use the other a bit more. But then I looked behind me and the group was split in half and that was the end of it. I was hard to come back after that“.
… continued after advert
Jens Keukeleire: “It would have been nicer if I had have won but of course it’s nice to get on the podium,” Keukeleire said. “We did almost everything we had to do. We had to get in the break, that was the first thing, we had to reduce the size of the group, that was the second thing, and the third thing was to finish it off and we just couldn’t manage to do that.”
“We had talked about a roundabout in the bus. It was better to take the right side but that wasn’t really on my mind. I knew the final and I only realised it once we were already on the roundabout. If Boasson Hagen goes, then you know that you shouldn’t give him more than 10 metres. He’s one of the strongest riders in the world.”
Simon Yates: “Today the start was pretty hard but once the break went we just kept good tempo and really tried to save the legs for tomorrow,” Yates said. “I don’t know a lot about the course tomorrow. It looks pretty technical on paper and we will go and check it out in the morning before the stage. A time trial is always difficult no matter where it is or how it is. You need to put in your maximum and I will be looking to do that tomorrow, hopefully without any issues like mechanicals or crashes.”
