News: JLT Condor in Canada
Fresh from a win at the London Nocturne and following a stage win and promising performances at the Tour of Japan, JLT Condor travelled to Canada to make their first ever appearance at the Tour de Beauce, North America’s longest-running stage race.
The seven-man squad used a gap in the European stage race calendar to travel to Quebec for the five stage race, but unfortunately, the different style of racing and a heavy crash mid-way through the week saw the team struggle in the event.
John Herety’s team, which featured three sprinters fresh from the Tour Series, finished in the top ten on the opening stages of the race, with Tom Stewart sprinting for third on a hilly circuit in Quebec on day four. However, it was a crash on stage four that thwarted JLT Condor’s chances of a jersey when Welshman, Ed Laverack, who finished well on the summit of Mount Megantic, was taken down in an heavy fall, forcing him to retire from the race.
Team Manager, John Herety, was disappointed not to come away with more from the team’s debut. “Ed was riding very strongly and our team plan was to keep working to move Ed further up the standings in the two remaining stages. When we lost him because of the heavy crash, we let Tom Stewart go and ride for himself and he took third on the stage.”
“We are disappointed not to have taken from the race after coming from strong rides in the Tour Series and Nocturne. Our focus now switches to the National Championships in Britain at the end of the month.”
