DAY 4, Tuesday, OCT 15
Day 4 was the busiest day so far at the Championship with sixteen titles presented to riders on the podium after a mix of Pursuiting, Time Trials, Match Sprinting and Bunch races (Points & Scratch).
The best nation on the day based on Gold medals won was the USA with no less than six rainbow jerseys followed by the British with three, two each of Argentina, France and Australia, and one to Poland.
In the many Time Trials held on the day (results below), there were two new World’s Best Times set with Julie Barnett of Australia in the Women’s 55-59 age category and James Kloss setting a new best time in the 80-84 category.
The Men’s sprint saw some world class times over 200 metres with Arnaud Duble beating Itmar Esteban Herraiz two heats to nil in the men’s 35-39 to take the world title. Ireland’s Kieran Leahy won the Bronze, also in two straight rides.
In the 40-44 Men’s Sprint, Yann Dujarrier beat the Aussie Shane Dirks in two close finishes to win the title for France whilst the host nation won the bronze thanks to Adam Welch beating the USA’s two rides to nil.
The Men’s 45-49 Scratch race was a very fast affair with riders being dropped out the back through out the race and in the sprint for the line from those left, Alejandro Acton of Argentina won just ahead of Martin Van Wyk of South Africa and Diego Rozie, also of Argentina.
The 35-39 Points race was an especially tough race with the bunch splitting over and over as the strongest riders continued lapping their rivals. The strongest by far though was winner Michal Ladosz of Poland who took lap after lap on his own to win by almost 40 points. Quite an amazing performance by the Polish rider.
