Jim Brown, Dan Tulett, Reece Wood, Euan Macleod & Damien Clayton the new signings to make eighteen riders in the Canyon dhb SunGod UCI team’s 2021 squad
Winner of no less than three prems back in 2019, Rory Townsend will continue with the team
Tim Elverson has unveiled an 18-man squad who will ride in the colours of Canyon dhb SunGod next season. The owner and sports director has retained the services of 13 members of this year’s Canyon dhb p/b Soreen line-up and has added five new faces, including three under-23 riders as he prepares for the UCI Continental team’s fifth season.
The new signings are Jim Brown, Dan Tulett, Reece Wood, Euan Macleod & Damien Clayton. Re-signing are Andrew Tennant, Ryan Christensen, Jacob Scott, Matthew Bostock, Rory Townsend, Brenton Jones, Max Stedman, Jacob Hennessy, Rob Scott, Callum Macleod, Ollie Wood, Charlie Tanfield and Thomas Mein.
Elverson said: “Many of the 2020 squad got the chance to show what they’re made of this year, but equally some didn’t, so making any changes for next year has been tricky. Keeping many of the 2020 squad was obvious to me as it was, in my opinion, the strongest team I had assembled. I was however keen to bring in some strong young guys and replace a bit of strength that I have lost with rider retirement (Paton) and elevation. We have raced more than 50 days in UCI events in both 2018 and 2019 and and still managed 15 this year. So that’s priority whilst also supporting the national A scene in Britain providing it happens in 2021”.
The New Riders
Damien Clayton: “Since starting my racing journey in 2017 I’ve always looked up to the Canyon team, admired their approach and has been a team I’ve been striving towards. I have developed a good relationship with most of the riders and some staff, most notably Rory Townsend and whom I am extremely excited to be riding and working with. I believe the team will suit me the most in terms of the racing calendar and approach to racing. I chose the team as I believe Tim and Simon can really develop me as a rider and racer which I am eager to do.”
“I am most looking forward to really being part of a team and absorbing as much of the experience as I can with a hopefully better racing calendar in 2021. My main goals for 2021 would be to develop my racing knowledge and build up more foreign racing experience. I’m not specifically targeting anything as such apart from performing well in races where the parcour suits me.”
Dan Tulett: “I believe the setup and team ethos of Canyon dhb SunGod will provide me with the best opportunities for me to showcase what I’m capable of and get the most out me as an athlete. I’m looking forward to wearing the jersey with pride and doing my best for the team. I’d like to make the team for the Tour of Britain. It’s always been a race I would love to compete in and perform in however I’ve never had the chance to. I think it could suit my style quite nicely. I would also like to target some hilly/punchy races next year as I feel like these suit me best. What these races will be, I’m not sure yet but I’m sure there will be many opportunities with the team.”
Reece Wood: “I’m really excited to see how the 2021 season unfolds with Canyon dhb SunGod. I’ve raced against them many times in previous teams, and always noticed how well the team works together and the high morale. I’ll even be teammates with my brother, that should be good! I‘m looking forward to the calendar as it’s really going to suit my style, with a lot of Belgian and French rolling terrain races. My main goal for the season is to win a UCI race. I’ve come close a fair few times over the last couple of years, and I think with the team it’s very doable. I’m not one to plan months ahead, but there will be races I aim for. Hopefully the season brings a lot of team wins our way!”
Euan Macleod: “Excited would be a great word to describe my thoughts on joining Canyon dhb SunGod” Euan says. “When you’re young, you see riders at this level and it seems like a mile away, so to be racing my bike for Canyon dhb SunGod is really cool. I’m looking forward to taking the next step to reach my dream with Canyon dhb SunGod, especially being part of a team full of riders I have looked up to for a couple of years. I’ve worked hard and cannot wait to get stuck in to some racing after the lack of it this year, and I’m also excited to achieve some big goals with the team. It will be a learning curve but one I am looking forward too.”
“There are a lot of opportunities on the team’s racing calendar which I hope to meet my own personal goals whether that be with the team’s or my own individual results. I’m looking forward to getting stuck into some of the Under 23 specific races. I’m interested to see what I’m capable of and we will be going there with a very strong team so that is also exciting.”
“I’m really looking forward to racing with the men and gaining experiences along the way, hopefully doing a good job for the team. I think next year the aim is to learn as much as possible and get to grips with the new category of racing. Obviously the Tour of Britain and Tour of Antalya are big races but I need to be realistic and see how I’m coping with the step up before I begin to look at the big races. But if all goes to plan, they are two races I would be super keen to get stuck into.”
Jim Brown: “I’m super excited to be riding for Canyon dhb SunGod in 2021. I was drawn to the team by their race calendar which is second to none, the friendly and fun atmosphere of the team and also because of the team’s aspirations to help younger riders like me progress into the professional ranks. I can’t wait to get racing some of the biggest races in Europe with some of my good mates! My eyes are set on the Under 23 spring races (Paris Roubaix and Tryptique des Monts et Châteaux in particular). On paper, these races suit me perfectly and I am now at the level where I can go to these races to win, so that’s the aim.”
