This Sunday (April 28) South End Wheelers are organising Andrews Trophy (Nat B) and Florrie Newbery Classic (2/3/4) at East Hanningfield

RACES
1. Andrews Trophy: 9.00am | 80 mile (13 laps) road race. National B Open to senior male Elite, 1st, 2nd & 3rd category riders, final year Junior male 1st, 2nd & 3rd category and Senior female Elite, 1st and 2nd category riders with a Full Racing Licence. The Andrews Trophy Road Race will be 12 laps of the East Hanningfield Road Race Circuit with the finish on the last lap at the top of the rise on Pan Lane.

The Andrews Trophy is in memory of Tony Andrews. Presented to the Club by the Chelmer CC in 1982. The Andrews Trophy Road Race was a Romford RC promotion which started in 1963. Tony, together with his elder brother Brian and parents Jack and Ena we’re all Wheelers’ members. Tony left the club to join the Zeus RC and then was one of several riders that broke away to form the Romford RC, including Derek Worsley and Fred Little.

Following Tony’s death from leukaemia the Andrews Trophy was organised by Romford RC, then the promotion was passed to the Chelmer CC and now with Southend Wheelers.

2. Florrie Newbery Classic: 2.00pm | 62 mile (10 laps) road race. Regional A (Female) Open to senior and junior female 2nd, 3rd and 4th category riders with a full racing licence or holders of a day licence. The Florrie Newbery Classic will be 10 laps of the East Hanningfield Road Race Circuit with the finish on the last lap at the top of the rise on Pan Lane.

Who is Florrie Newbery? Florrie Newbery was the first female to join Southend Wheelers back on 3rd February 1937. Florrie went on to lead many club runs, generate interest for local female riders to join and compete in Time Trials. When starting a new Female Road Race, we wanted to honour the start of Female riders in the club. Florrie was also the first female committee member.
