Riding for Welsh Cycling’s track team, Team USN, Sam Harrison won the first medal of the evening in an enthralling Points Race at the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome. Harrison saved his legs early on in the 120 lap race, taking 2 points in the fourth sprint. But as the race progressed and the leaders started to tire, Harrison took advantage collecting a further 7 sprint points and taking a lap with Meyer (Australia) and Thomas (France). The trio took the podium places, with Harrison winning bronze for Team USN.
Sam Harrison, Team USN said: “I was really happy with my performance today. Darren Tudor and Welsh Cycling have put a lot of work in to me since I left the British Cycling set-up, and today’s medal was a goal for the team, and a personal goal for me. It’s a great result for Team USN.
The plan was to save myself early on, but Mark Stewart and Cameron Meyer took a lap and I thought it isn’t going to be my day. In the last 40 laps I picked up some points and just started to make my way up the leader board. With 15 laps to go everything felt great, I had the legs and wanted to go for it. It was a bit of surprise, but I’m really happy.â€
Early in the day, Harrison, from Risca, competed in the UCI Class 1 Scratch Race alongside Newport’s Jon Mould, where they finished 8th and 15th respectively.
Team USN’s second medal of the evening came from sprinter Lewis Oliva in the Keirin. Oliva took the long road to the final, having to go through the first round repechage to make it to round two. Initially finishing in fourth in Heat 2 of Round 2, Kawabata (Japan) was relegated and Oliva progressed to the finals. But it was a welcome return to the podium for Lewis Oliva, in Team USN colours.

Lewis Oliva, Team USN said: “I was unsure how my training was going in Newport, but I could see from the sprint qualifiers I was in good form. The legs were stinging a bit from Sprints yesterday, and it was a bit scrappy going through the reps.
It’s been a massive learning curve, with the new Keirin rules. The game plan changed through each round, but I became more patient and more confident. I have to be in a position to be fresh and go for it with one and a half laps to go. There’s less laps behind the bike, more out on your own. It’s hard to tell if the new format suits me yet, but it’s still my favourite race and I’m looking to progress and move up the podium in the Track World Cup Series.
It’s nice to add to the World Cup medal collection again, and to be doing it for Wales through Team USN. With both myself and Sam winning medals tonight, it’s brought a spark to them as we head to Apeldoorn next week.â€
Devauden’s Lewis Oliva also competed in the Sprint, where he finished 9th on Friday. Both Sam Harrison and Lewis Oliva will be competing in the UCI Track Cycling World Cup in Apeldoorn 11-13 November 2016.
