The very popular Gent Six in Belgium starts today with British interest in both the pro and under 23 events

Gent Six: Brits in Pro & U23 Events
The classic Six Day event in Gent (Belgium), has plenty of British interest in 2016 with World Champions Mark Cavendish and Bradley Wiggins riding at Wiggo’s farewell party. They are however not the only Brits who will be going around and around the little Six Day track.
Scotland’s Mark Stewart and England’s Oli Wood race in the pro event whilst in the Under 23’s, winners of the London Three Day for U23, Grant Martin and Andy Brown race, as do Joe Holt and Matthew Bostock.

The event has a rich history, going back to the 1920’s and during that almost hundred year period, the Brits have not only flocked there to sample the Belgian beers and frites, but riders from the island have also tasted success at the event.
In 1965, Tom Simpson was second to the dream team of Patrick Sercu (the most successful six day rider ever) and Eddy Merckx (the most successful road rider ever). But success there is not as common as it could become and it wasn’t until the 80’s before another Brit was on the podium, Tony Doyle in 1984.
The former world champion was again on the podium in 1985 (second) and went up a step in 1986 with victory partnered by the legendary Aussie Danny Clarke.
Doyle and Clarke were third in 1988 before Doyle teamed up with Etienne de Wilde in 1991 to win the race again. Britain had to wait until 2002 before a certain Bradley Wiggins at 21 was second with Matthew Gilmore.
A year later, during the year that Wiggins won his first World title (Pursuit), he won Gent with Gilmore and it is easy to see why there is such a love affair for the race for Brad. Not withstanding the family connection to Belgium and the event, Brad though has yet to taste success there again whilst his partner there this year, Mark Cavendish was second in 2014.
There is further British interest in Raleigh GAC’s rider for a few years now, Morgan Keisky, has been on the podium and returns to the race again in 2016.
Success in the Under 23 version has also come to the Brits with Chris Lawless winning with Matt Gibson in 2014. Simon Yates and Owain Doull won the race as well in 2011 whilst the year before, Jon Mould and Simon Yates were third. In 2009, Kneisky was second with Luke Rowe and Jon Mould in third.
Got a feeling this years event will be quite a party for the Brits…
