News: GB to Race North-East Cycling Festival
The Great Britain Cycling Team has confirmed that it will be sending teams from both the men’s and women’s Olympic Senior Academy Programmes to the Cyclone Festival of Cycling in June. The women will compete in the Curlew Cup, a round of the HSBC National Women’s Road Series, whilst the men will compete in the international Beaumont Trophy race, both starting from the village of Stamfordham, near Newcastle-upon-Tyne on Sunday 18th June.
The women’s team is expected to comprise the full seven-rider roster of the Programme, Megan Barker, Abbie Dentus, Ellie Dickinson, Manon Lloyd, Mel Lowther, Emily Nelson and Becky Raybould. Several of the riders have already made a name for themselves in international racing, with Manon Lloyd taking an historic gold medal in the inaugural women’s World Cup Madison race, in Glasgow, where her racing partner was World and Olympic champion, Katie Archibald. Meanwhile, Emily Nelson is an under-23 European Champion in the Team Pursuit and has just returned from her second senior World Track Championships in Hong Kong.

Whilst details of the men’s line-up for the Beaumont Trophy are yet to be finalised, recent winner of the Under-23 Ghent-Wevelgem, Jacob Hennessy, is expected to ride. The 20 year old has only been racing for three years, but major wins are already his stock-in-trade and he will be a serious contender for the race, which was previously won by an Academy rider, Chris Latham, who was 21 when he took victory in 2015.
British Cycling’s senior academy men’s endurance coach Keith Lambert said: “At this stage of the squad’s development, experience of racing at a high level is invaluable and a race of the Beaumont Trophy’s calibre is a great opportunity for the riders to gain this.”
Cyclone Festival of Cycling organizer Peter Harrison said: “The GB Team’s Academy Programme riders are always extremely welcome entrants to our races. Given the reputation of the Academy for developing future stars, it’s almost inevitable that we will see future senior World and Olympic champions racing in the team’s colours in June. And in Jacob Hennessy, they have a rider who has captured the racing public’s imagination already.”
