Stage 3, Bryn Bach Park Circuit
Joe Nally wins the third stage of the Junior Tour of Wales with a late attack
The third stage of the Junior Tour of Wales was a circuit race at the Parc Bryn Bach Circuit over 20 miles and whilst there were a few attacks, they were short lived and most of the action was at the back where splits would happen and riders would get distanced.
Unlike previous years where the race would split, even over such a short distance, this year there were still fourty riders at the front and the winning move came 700 metres from the line when Scotland’s Joe Nally made a surprise attack and held off, just, the fast finishing race leader Tom Pidcock with Jacob Vaughan third.
Lap 1 and the peloton was lined out but after that there was bunching up on the climb showing that at times, the racing wasn’t was fast as expected.
Tom Pidcock (race leader): “It was a negative stage this morning, the complete opposite to yesterday. It wasn’t hard enough . I put one attack in even though I knew everyone was going to be watching me because they know I am good crits (Tom is the British Senior Crit champion) . So I thought I would put one big attack in but everyone was too fresh.”
“On the last lap, I attacked at the top of the hill, and I should have carried on as I had Fred on the back foot chasing me but I decided to wait for the sprint, and we all sat up and then Nally went straight over the top. I wasn’t on the front so couldn’t do anything about it and Fred didn’t go either. I didn’t quite get him back in the sprint.”
Winner was second year junior Joe Nally: “I didn’t expect it to stay together like that” he explained after a little wind down. “Last year it was different in the wet but this year but being drier, it was a lot quicker. So the bunch wasn’t splitting as much, no one was committing too much but the pace was high the whole way.”
“I knew with a good move, I could do something. Coming into the last climb, I actually got dropped with three quarters of a lap to go, with about a group of 15 getting a gap. I wasn’t far off and I was on Tom’s wheel who was chasing to get back on and the front group eased up on the descent, and sitting on Tom’s wheel, I felt quite fresh.”
“I saw a gap on the left with about 700 to go and I just hit it and had so much more speed than anyone else and managed to hold it to the end. The win today is extra sweet as I had a shocker of a day yesterday just suffering up every climb and I thought it was season over so to come out with a win the next day makes it better.”
Asked about what he does after this event looking ahead to 2018, and Joe replied “I’m waiting to hear about senior Academy selection but I am looking at other teams as well. I’d love to go and live abroad but not sure how realistic that is but a British team would be sweet too.”
The Junior Tour of Wales has an afternoon stage today as well, Stage 4 near Abergavenny.
