Madison Genesis name their six man team for the 2017 Tour of Britain
Alex Blain, Taylor Gunman, Rich Handley, Matt Holmes, Johnny McEvoy and Connor Swift will line up and take on eight days and 1313-kilometres of racing across England, Scotland and Wales.
Madison Genesis qualified to be one of just four British domestic teams eligible to race against World Tour opposition – including Team Sky, Orica Scott and Movistar.
Speaking after making the squad selection, team manager Mike Northey was confident that the team would make a positive impact on the race. “The Tour of Britain will be our final and most important race of 2017 and the team I’ve selected reflects that. The young age of the team shows our commitment to developing talent and giving those who show potential the opportunity to compete at the highest level.”
“We’ve also got some great experience in there, with Johnny and Rich capable of getting into breaks and making the most of the huge level of exposure that Britain’s longest stage race attracts.”
Alex Blain
After a season disrupted by a huge crash in Tro Bro Leon, Blain is back and will be the engine room of the team. This will be the fourth Tour of Britain in his legs and the flatter edition will suit his abilities well.
Best Tour of Britain stage result: 8th (2010)
Taylor Gunman
Working tirelessly to support others all year long, Gunman returns to complete domestique duties at his second Tour of Britain. Taylor had a rough ride in 2016, battling on after a crash on stage three and it’s this determination that makes him a pick for the 2017 lineup.
Rich Handley
Like McEvoy, this will be Handley’s seventh Tour of Britain, bringing a depth of experience to the team never seen before. Handley may also fancy a tilt at the overall should he rediscover the time-trial form that saw him place top-five at the British Championships in 2016.
Season highlight: Chorley GP – 5th
Best Tour of Britain stage result: 5th (2011)
Matt Holmes
After a standout performance at the Tour de Yorkshire, where he finished fifth overall and best British rider, Holmes will face a challenging third Tour of Britain. Excelling in hilly terrain that the race lacks, Holmes will have to turn opportunist and make long range attempts – a concept that he’s familiar with. Many will look at his 2016 Ride London breakaway as an example.
Season highlight: Tour de Yorkshire – 5th
Best Tour of Britain finishes: 66th (2016), 93rd (2015)
Johnny McEvoy
McEvoy lines up for his seventh Tour of Britain in ten years – he was just 18 when he made his debut. A solid domestic campaign has seen him at the sharp end of almost every race and Johnny will be looking to convert that into one big performance. A favourite to sprint to a stage win if his breakaway move stays away to the end.
Season highlight: Tour Series round three – 2nd
Best Tour of Britain stage result: 6th (2010)
Connor Swift
With three wins so far this year, Swift has had the perfect debut season with the team. He has a vicious turn of speed and strength and although nobody knows what he is capable of over a week-long race, to count him out of doing something special would be an error.
Season highlight: Leicester GP – 1st
