Report: RL360 Isle of Man Youth League 19
A total of 191 competitors contested last Tuesday night’s 19th and final round of Team RL360 Isle of Man’s 2017 Youth League.
Before the action got underway the Island’s Chief Minister Howard Quayle MHK and Minister for Sport Graham Cregeen MHK presented former Team RL360 members Thomas “Jimmy” Bostock and Tara Ferguson with framed certificates commemorating their gold and silver medal winning performances in the recent Commonwealth Youth Games in the Bahamas.
Making the most of the near perfect conditions, Poppy Clayton outsprinted Cameron Eyres and Gracie Evans for her 13th win in the born 2012 & later age group. Kieran Binns pipped Oliver Kennington for fourth and Oscar Maddrell stayed clear of chasers Euan Kinnish, Henry Kinrade and India Smith to claim sixth. Charley Skillen won the bunch gallop for tenth.
In the novices class Jackson Roberts rode away from fellow escapee Lukas Wooton on the finishing straight to bag maximum points for the seventh time in the series. Ewan McCubbon was a safe third and leading girl Hollie Beattie maintained a solid fourth ahead of Daniel Baker, John Quaye and Naomi Nesbitt in fifth to seventh places. Elliott Dowd-Williams shaded Elliott Sayle in the tussle for eighth and Alexander Jones outran Bradley Malone and Alisha McCullagh in the rush for tenth.
Finbar McSevney passed Jacob Wilson in the closing stages to grab the top slot in the born 2011 category. Alex McCullagh was a solid third and Charlie Dormer ousted Bernat Munoz-Fite in the group gallop for fourth. Macaulay Teare, Bobby Kerruish, Toby Costain, Joshua Moffitt and Abigail Cowell completed the top ten.
Returning from a four week holiday in the USA, Stanley Kinnish went from the gun in the born 2010 event and soloed to victory. Kylan Murphy got the better of Brad Le Geyt in the dash for second and top girl Lula Kinnish came in on her own to secure fourth. Max Messenger overcame Daniel Minay and Conor Madsen-Mygdal in the scrap for fifth, with Thomas Hutchinson leading Hugh Osborn and Rebecca Radcliffe over the line for eighth.
In the born 2009 age group Eddie Dillon edged out Cameron Hounsell and Tom Pickavance in the final lunge for the top step on the podium. May-Saa Smith came from behind to snatch fourth from Zach Jones and Harry Beattie led Henry Dormer in for sixth. Florrie Thomas was a lonely eighth and Matthew Hooper outgunned Ben Coole, Jazzy Dillon and Harry Jones in the battle for ninth.
Alec Sorby clipped off the front of a leading group of seven riders to pick up his ninth win in the born 2008 class. T.J. Teare and Charlie Williams were second and third, closely followed by Leon Murphy, Fearne Bregazzi, Nathan Hubbard and George Kinnish. Bob Radcliffe, Jamie Gibson and Ella Darnill came in together to round off the top ten leader board.
Continuing his recent run of good form, Orry Lund took the chequered flag in the born 2007 race. Oscar Gaylor held off Jordan Carter and James Kinrade in the struggle for the runners-up spot, while Ed Coole kept first girl Jess Pickavance at bay for fifth. In the following born 2006 & earlier grouping James Scott produced an impressive turn of speed to notch up his maiden win in front of travelling companions Callum Salisbury, Ivan Sorby, Chloe Dillon and Nicola Quaye.
The ever improving Oscar Gaylor got the better of his five breakaway companions to gain his first ever success in the under-8 and under-10 racing bikes. Orry Lund beat Alec Sorby, Charlie Williams, Rio Kelly and James Kinrade in the battle for second, while Florence Griffin edged Fearne Bregazzi for the girls’ prize in tenth spot.
The under-12 racing bikes five lapper ended in a similar fashion with Tyler Annis getting the verdict over Niall Colquitt in a frantic final sprint. Ivan Sorby was third and Sophie Smith the best girl in eighth place.
Tosh Teare emerged from a leading group of ten riders to increase his tally of wins in the under 14 and under-16 racing bikes to three. Newly discovered sprint ace Dan Sowerby was second and overall leader Max Walker third. Will Corkill, Aaron Lund, Zac Walker, Adam Scarffe, Tyler Hannay, Corrin Leeming and first girl Amelia Sharpe were just behind in fourth to tenth places respectively.
* The league’s final overall placings and special award winners will be revealed at the prize presentation in the Villa Marina on Saturday, 16th September.
