Q&A: Jessica Finney (Brother UK/Tifosi)
VeloUK: How did you get into the sport of cycling?
Jessica: I have always loved watching the track events on TV when I was young and so decided when at University to join my local club Portsmouth North End. The club were active in racing and is where I met my now boyfriend. He encouraged me to try out racing and ever since I have been hooked.
VeloUK: Full time rider, student or working
Jessica: Work.
VeloUK: Best result for you in 2018?
Jessica: 9th in Stockton GP
VeloUK: Best organised/fun race you did in 2018?
Jessica: Tour De Yorkshire, without a doubt
VeloUK: Toughest race of 2018?
Jessica: Cicle Classic. Partially self induced – a change of saddle height the night before did not pay off and suffered with the worst back pain ever on the bike. Everyday is a learning day.
VeloUK: Best and Funniest moments in a race in 2018?
Jessica: Funniest moment: Anna Henderson’s ‘Oh ****’ reaction to falling off her bike in the neutralised zone during the soaked Wembley Park. Best Moment: Seeing Anna Henderson storm through the field at the same Tour Series race to take 2nd and us winning the team prize on the night.
VeloUK: Do you train alone or have others to help you get through the ride?
Jessica: I do most of my training with Jamie, but also try get out with my local club where possible.

VeloUK: In the winter, training on the road or indoors?
Jessica: Training on the road. I’m very fortunate my work hours are usually evening shifts so I can usually get all the training I need to do in the light beforehand.
VeloUK: How many hours on the bike can you fit in during an average winter training week?
Jessica: I work evenings so I manage to fit in an average of 10-15 hours a week
VeloUK: Is there any off the bike training (running/swimming/gym etc)?
Jessica: Gym
VeloUK: Do you train with any gadgets (Heart rate/power) or just go on ‘feel’ of the ride?
Jessica: Yes. This is the first winter training using a power meter. However I still do the majority of the riding on feel. I think thats really important, but the numbers are just there to make sure I’m doing the correct training.
VeloUK: Are you eager to race again or happy to wait for the first to come along in 2019?
Jessica: Yes and no. Excited about racing with the new team next year but still have a lot of training miles I would like to get in first.

VeloUK: Are you doing anything different in training this winter than last one?
Jessica: Yes, massively. Last winter I had no structure, I just rode my bike. This winter I really have a good plan to my training and focus on my weakness from the last racing season.
VeloUK: Which races are you looking forward to most in 2019
Jessica: The Cicle Classic. I really felt like I let myself down last year and it’s a course that should suit me.
VeloUK: Favourite pre race meal?
Jessica: Spaghetti Bolognese
VeloUK: Favourite race drink?
Jessica: Sis electrolyte
VeloUK: Best one thing you learned about racing in 2018?
Jessica: How to stay relaxed during the build up of a race and this may sound off but to pack my kit bag the night before instead of a few days before.
VeloUK: Favourite professional to watch on tele (male or female) and favourite race(s) you like to watch and inspire you?
Jessica: This season its been Danni Rowe, I find it inspiring the way she rides at the front with such ease and always looking to race.
