LOCKDOWN! With the Isle of Man’s Conor Davies (Saint Piran)
In the latest Lockdown! quiz, the Isle of Man’s Conor Davies (Saint Piran) tells us about life on the Isle of Man at this time. During the season, Conor is a full time rider thanks to the help of the Isle of Man Sports Aid and the James Berry Fund. Meanwhile, in the winter, he does different types of jobs to earn some extra money. For the first time since 2017, he’ll be living and training mainly on the Isle of Man.
Q: Your last race was?
Conor: The Evesham road race on the 8th of March.
Q: With racing cancelled, what’s a typical week training wise for you?
Conor: I’ve pretty much gone back to the winter program with some long steady rides and some strength stuff but with everything going on, having to jump on the turbo too. The hours are between 16-23 hours.
Q: Enjoying the turbo or avoiding it like the virus?
Conor: I try to avoid the turbo at all costs.
Q: If on the turbo, what’s your favourite distraction – Zwift or some other entertainment?
Conor: It depends on the session. If it’s less than an hour, I just knock it out and get it done with just some music. Now I’ve been sent a Saris Smart Trainer, I’ll be looking to use Zwift for a bit of racing.

Q: What’s the hardest thing for you about the Lock Down on the Isle of Man
Conor: The hardest thing would be not being able to just socialise, as it’s such a small place you’re always going to know someone anywhere you go but as everyone is having to stay at home, it’s getting a bit boring.
Q: Besides cycling, what’s your biggest distraction as lock down continues?
Conor: I think my years in Belgium have come in handy. As anyone that has spent a long period of time there knows, it’s not the most interesting place so I’ve got used to not having much to do. But I would say just chatting to the boys and watching films and bit of Xbox is getting me through it.
Q: What’s the bike that gets the most use by you and why what is the best thing about it?
Conor: Since I received it from the team, it’s been the Colnago Concept. The last few years I’ve had a team bike that I just never got on with at all, so it’s nice to just have a bike that I just clicked with.
Q: What’s the weirdest thing you have seen since this crisis began
Conor: It will have to be seeing a guy stopped at some traffic lights with that much toilet roll filled in his car there was also some strapped to the roof.
Q: Finally, where you do you enjoy riding the most on the Isle of Man
Conor: I like to ride in the South of the island as there is a good choice of roads with long climbs up to 20 minutes and short sharp 5-10 minute climbs, so the time goes pretty quickly and the best cafe on the island is in Port st Mary.
Thanks to Conor and good luck to him during this tough period around the world.
