Two weeks ago, Freddie Scheske left home in the early hours of the morning to drive up to meet five of his teammates for a 100 mile ride in the rain over the hills of Derbyshire.
Before stamping on the pedals with his teammates, he explained this year has been hard for him with no racing? “I was raring to go at the start of the season and got my first race done in France and then all of a sudden everything was locked down which was very disappointing.”
Freddie lives in Exeter, which has hosted the Tour Series many years ago and he explained how he struggled after the Tour Series, Elite Crits and other races were cancelled. “I do thrive off focusing on a race, training for it and racing it before the same again for the next race and so on. So it has been hard. I have it my head there will be something, I don’t know what, maybe September or October so I’ll keep plucking away? And when the races happen, if they happen, I’ll be ready”.
Freddie is at University studying Sports Science and even that saw major changes to his academic life as he finished his second year. “I did all the exams online which is still stressful but wasn’t too bad and then I carried on doing big miles.”
With time trials now resuming, Freddie admits he’ll do some on his road bike as that will be good training and then admits to having done his longest ride ever, 300km only a week before we spoke.
“That was a good day in the saddle and it wasn’t planned to be but it also ended up being on the hottest day of the year! We have a local training circuit near us and a few years ago, Max Stedman (Canyon DHB), did three laps of the circuit (50km laps). That was the record number of laps in one day and then someone else did four laps, and I thought you know what, I’ll beat that record and add an extra lap!”
“So I did six laps of the circuit. It’s fairly flat with 500 metres of climbing every 50k so not too hilly and you’re poking the pedals the whole way round.”
Freddie then went and chatted to his teammates saying it was cool to see the guys in person for the first time in three months or more. Lets hope for Freddie’s sake and the rest of us, there is some bunch racing to come in 2020 to go with the time trials
