Alejandro Valverde has once again announced at the Movistar team presentation that he wants to stop after this year. “In my mind, this is my last year, but I am starting this season with great enthusiasm and all good intentions,” said the 40-year-old Spaniard.

Valverde wants to show himself this year. “If I can achieve victories, that’s even better. But I start this season with the idea that it will be my last season. It will be a beautiful and special year. First, let’s see if we can organise all the races”, he says.

Last year, Valverde was still in doubt. His plan was to quit after 2021, but for a moment he held the door open for an extra season, then backed out. But his first race this season is just around the corner. ‘El Imbatido’ focuses on the hill classics, the Olympic Games and the Vuelta a España.

“My biggest goal is the Olympic road race. I want to be there, because it is also a very good year to ride there. It will be difficult, ”Valverde admits. “But I will keep training and fighting to be 100 percent in Tokyo.”
