Riders in Spain: Lucas Towers (Team Previley)
Lucas with Devin Shortt who he will be racing with in Spain.
The third rider to be featured today who will be racing in Spain this weekend, is Lucas Towers who had a stunning 2021. As a junior last year, Lucas was on the podium in Spanish stage races and here in the UK, GC and stage wins in the Tour of Sussex and L’Etape de la Defonce (senior races) and was also on the podium in the Junior Tour of Wales as well as the winner of the Queen stage up the Tumble.
This weekend he makes his debut in the senior ranks as an under 23 racing for a Spanish team, Team Previley Maglia Coforma Bembibre. On twitter, Lucas says “Memorial Jesus Pereda tomorrow (Sat), 135km and 2700m of climbing and ☀️ on the forecast. Perfect.” Lucas added “arrived in Spain ahead of the start of the season. Two hard races back-to-back so no easing in to it, but wouldn’t want it any other way”.
Lucas is based in Bembibre where his team is based, not from where the Road Worlds were held at Ponferrada in 2014. He says of the season ahead, “I’m really looking forward to a season in Spain as I think the racing suits me. The races have nice climbs and the racing style suits me quite well so I’m looking forward to getting stuck in”.
Winning on the Tumble in the Junior Tour of Wales
The highlight in 2021 for Lucas was getting that stage win in the Junior Tour of Wales and he is looking to get a few wins this year. “My big goals are to win a race whether that be a stage race, a one day race or podium at a Copa de Espana (Spanish National Series) event and get up there in the big races. It will be good to see how I’m going in the first few races”.
Lucas spent the winter in South Africa with his family explaining that during the first half of the stay there, it was really windy before it cleared up. “It was good to get some training in under the sun there so I definitely can’t complain about my winter although I did get Covid and had to have two weeks off.”
Lucas also had some success racing there, winning the White jersey in the Tour Du Cap in South Africa by over 16 minutes in the four stage Pro/Elite event as well as finishing 7th overall racing against Elites on junior gears.
His last big effort in Britain was in the family business social ride, the Cycle Division smashfest where he was flat stick against the likes Lewis Askey, Toby Barnes and others. “It was good and nice to see where my level is at against riders like Lewis. He’s going very well so I have a bit more work to do” Lucas explained in early February. “The first lap was an easy, social pace then the last laps were like being in a race. It split up early and we were smashing it for two hours.”
Good luck to Lucas and Devin in Spain this weekend along with the British riders …
