News: New Moda Bikes for Cycling Sheffield
Former professional Dave Williams of Moda Bikes with Cycling Sheffield boss Dave Coulson at the team launch
Elite team, Cycling Sheffield, who’s manager Dave Coulson I remember racing prems back in the early days of when I started out doing what I do, have new bikes for 2023 from their sponsors Moda Bikes with boss Dave Williams a former professional and winner of the Eddie Soens among many races.
Cycling Sheffield had their team launch last week with both Dave Coulson (team boss) and Dave Williams (team sponsor) in attendance and both of them know the sport of road racing inside out. Dave Williams, boss at DHW Agencies with brands such as Moda Bikes, GSG Clothing, Spinergy wheels and more, did most of the classics in his day; Gent-Wevelgem, Amstel Gold, Liege-Bastogne-Liege, Flech-Wallone. He has also won the Eddie Soens Trophy twice, a race he says “its like the Worlds for us up north”.
Speaking at the team launch, Dave says of his sponsorship of the Cycling Sheffield team, “it’s good to give some under 23 racers product to test. I guess the guys will be doing 20 hours plus per week on the bike in both training and race conditions, so their feedback is very thorough and I know they’ll do some good miles on the bikes. On a personal basis, we are proud to be supporting an under 23 development team starting out within the sport.”
“They have a great team set up and to have the experience behind them of Dave Coulson and his knowledge is really important for the riders to learn from and for the successful running of the team. He is giving the team a good structure and a race calendar that will develop them as riders. Having the Moda brand out there in races also gives us a huge amount of satisfaction and pride. For example, at the National champions at Lincoln when we saw one of our own products riding past in the thick of the action, riding at top level, it was something that was only a dream a few years ago. Now it’s actually been ridden on the road just a couple of years later. The Moda ‘Finale’ has had a lot of work and time to produce so seeing it on the road in high level races this year will be even more special”.
Having had the sponsorship from Dave Williams for a few years now, Dave Coulson says of it “I’ve known Dave from the racing days and new it would be easy to work together. We’d always be on the same page with attention to detail and making sure on both sides, business and the racing team, everything runs smoothly and the image portrayed is important to us both. I feel like we’ve been quite a useful marketing tool to help with the Moda brand grow and develop too”.
“Dave was always one of the characters in the bunch, cracking people up as well as being a classy rider winning a lot of races. To this day, he has his finger on the pulse of the sport and the type of bikes we need to race on. It is great working with him and I’m looking forward to having my riders on his bikes in races in 2023”.
Asked what it means to an Elite team like Cycling Sheffield to have a bike sponsor, Dave replied “it’s incredibly valuable to have a bike sponsor especially from a company like Daves. As a former pro rider, he fully understands how difficult it is running a team and from day one, I knew it was going to be a good, easy working relationship. It’s great for the lads to be on the same bikes and as Dave from Moda says, it’s amazing what that does for morale. That team identity is key for a team”.

Keeping his team Cycling Sheffield on the road hasn’t always been straight forward. “I rebranded the team in 2017 as Cycling Sheffield at a point when the team was about to fold because we did lose important financial backing. It was a nice idea I had to create a team based on a geographical area (Sheffield) and the more I thought about it, I realised it has got to be more financially viable but it is still a lot of work.”
“All our partners are so supportive and there is a ‘connectiveness’ with the sponsors as a lot of them do business together just because of the connection through the team. I have always tried to work more effectively with fewer riders so I can put a lot into the working relationship with the rider. When everyone is healthy, it’s great but when you have injuries and illnesses etc, we do look like the walking wounded.”
The Moda Finale sure packs a punch in a sprint with a rider like James Hartley pushing the pedals around! James won the bunch kick for 2nd at Wakefield BKCAT circuit last Sunday in the Elite race.
