Result/Report: Harrogate Nova Road Race

This weekend saw the re-run of the Harrogate Nova open road race that was cancelled due to 80kph winds forecast when it was scheduled to run in May. Forty riders took to the start line for seven laps (100km) of the formidable Dacre circuit in Nidderdale, Yorkshire. Thanks to the generosity of two local bike shops, Specialized Concept Harrogate and Prologue Performance Cycling, prime prizes were on offer for the first riders across the finish line after 10km of racing and also at the top of the main climb of Harper lane after 23km of racing.

This led to full gas racing from the gun. Harper Johnson (360 Cycling) took the sprint prime and then Oli Sargent (Prologue Racing Team) took the KOM prime. After the KOM, Sargent continued on his own with another 70km of racing to go, a tall order for anybody to win on his own with such a distance to go.

After another lap a chase group formed with eleven riders. The gap by this time had stretched to more then two minutes. A lap later the gap had dropped to just over a minute and then it didn’t change for the next three laps as the chase group thought about who was going to commit to the chase.

On the penultimate climb it was Paddy Clark (Team Lifting Gear Products) and James Ingham (Prologue Racing Team) who escaped from the chase group and bridged across to the lone leader. Before the final ascent of Harper hill the lead trio had nearly a minute lead over the chase group, meaning that this group looked set to contest the sprint. Over the top of Harper hill, the Prologue duo worked to despatch Clark and the crossed the line celebrating with each other to take a deserved first and second. Clark, by now had been reeled back in by the chase group, meaning that Daniel Barnes (Spectra Racing) completed the podium.
