The finest hill climbers in the county battled for poll position at the Annual Wigmore CC Hill Climb event held at Hollingbourne Hill on Sunday, 6 October. Sixty riders completed the competition which involved scaling the 1.3km ever-steeping climb with an average gradient of 8.4%.

Starting from the Pilgrims Way the cyclists begin with a manageable ramp before turning the corner to be faced with what can best be described as ‘a wall of hill’, here riders must get out of the saddle and stamp on the pedals till they pass the chequered flag after the crest of the hill.
It is a fantastic event to watch and has a great atmosphere. The riders put on a top show for the spectators, with some incredible performances which did not disappoint. King of the mountain and overall winner was veteran hill climber Peter Tadros riding for In Gear Quickvit Transharp RT. He conquered the hill in an impressive time of 3 minutes and 16.9 seconds and looked surprisingly at ease whilst doing so.
Hot on his heals was junior rider Sebastian Dickson of Thanet RC in 3:23.2. Standing by his side on the podium in third was Paul Vine who made his promoting team proud by riding a 3:23.4. There were some outstanding performances by the Kent ladies with Deborah Pervical of 34 Nomads Gem Hygiene taking the win with 4:17.5. She was closely followed by Bronwen Ewing of Transharp RT in 4:26.2. The final place on the podium was filled by Georgina Hood of San Fariy Ann in 4:47.3.

The promoting club had further success with Wigmore CC taking team honours. Paul Vine, Keith Walker and Jack Heather won the team event with a combined time of 11:14.8. Taking this title undoubtedly made Paul’s impressive 2nd place overall even sweeter.
Kent sports photographer Dave Hayward was on hand to photograph the event, he said: ‘This was a great display of hill climbing with every rider giving all they had. Looking back at the photos the sheer determination on the faces of the competitors is clear for all to see. Well done to all of those who were brave enough to conquer one of the toughest climbs in Kent.’
