Darren Atkins is the winner of the 2013 LVRC National Cyclo-Cross Championships at Moreton Morrell in Warwickshire last weekend

From Jim Golden
The Championship was organised for the fifth year by Mick Ives and his team from Team Jewson MI Racing at Warwickshire College, Moreton Morrell, Warwickshire and sponsored by Jewson.
The course had road section, grassland, steep greasy descents, tough muddy run ups, flight of steps and woodland tracks, many with mud and a very greasy tree root; the kind of course you would experience in Belgium or Holland.
Top Veteran Cross rider Darren Atkins, from the promoting club went into an early lead and flew round the course, making it look so easy — chased hard by former mountain bike pro Tim Davies, riding his first LVRC race and Atkins teammate and current Midlands series champion — Phil Blacker who was very unlucky in the
closing stages to break off his rear mech, and had to run a considerable distance before getting to his spare bike.
Blacker was chased all the way by Welsh 50+ champion and another Team Jewson member, Phil Roach, with team mate Mark James close behind and ahead of the revelation of the race, 62 year old Dave Mc Mullen, in 6th place who has been in such great form all season.
One current UCI World Master’s Champion Vic Barnett and two past John Ginley and Mick Ives also rode. In the 75 + Cat –— won by John Griffin –– 2nd placed rider, Tony Summerfield, was the first ever British Veteran Cyclo Cross Champion, 37 years ago — and still going strong. He is also an LVRC Road Race organiser.
