Team News – Tired legs for Madison-Genesis at Durham

Some tired legs arrived at Durham after our success at the An Post Rás. Alex Peters and Ian Bibby, coming 2nd and 4th respectively in the 8 stage race in Ireland, joined Tom Scully, Mike Northey and Tobyn Horton for Round 5 of the Pearl Izumi Tour Series at a difficult Durham circuit, with the notorious cobbled climb.

When the race started, just after 7pm, Tom Scully and Mike Northey were immediately unlucky when they were taken out in the neutralised lap. This left Tobyn trying to cover what moves he could at the front whilst Alex and Ian were both still shaking Ireland out of their legs. Unfortunately, they were unable to do so and retired early in the race leaving our kiwi duo Mike and Tom with Tobyn in the chase.

The Durham circuit is a one of the most difficult of the Pearl Izumi Tour Series, and it was no easy task for the three remaining riders to catch the leaders. They put in some brave attempts with Mike almost making contact with the front group a number of times, but with no help from the others in the group, and on such a punishing course, this proved too hard.

With the front group of 7 staying clear for the whole race, despite the chasing efforts of Mike and Tom, they were able to finish 8th and 12th respectively. With the emphasis of the series being on the team’s performance Madison Genesis finished 6th on the night, not helped by several other teams enjoying their best performance of the 2014 season.
