On Sunday afternoon, riders gathered in the small town of Griffydam to take part in the final round of the season long RTTC Time Trial series. The event also carried the extra bonus of the winner taking the title of the National circuit champion.
The course would cover two laps of a very undulating circuit, starting in Griffydam, and taking in the villages of Tonge,Breedon, Lount, Newbold Coleorton returning to Griffydam in Leicestershire. On the final circuit, riders would do a three mile section to Belton giving a total distance of 20 miles.
All the top contenders from all the UK’s time trial scene were there but it was going to be a very special day for multi National champion Matthew Bottrill of www.drag2zero.com. Riding on his local roads and being unbeaten in the UK time trial scene this season, Bottrill was out to prove a point to the competition.
Matt took us through his race. “It’s been a quite an intense build up for me coming into this race as it was on local roads so I wanted to put on a good show. I was nervous all day, but could not wait to get on the road. All my family were here coming out to watch #teamBottrill. So I did not want to disappoint.”
“I was off at 2:34pm just two minutes behind Michael Hutchison. You always know if Hutch starts, he’s out to win and while I’ve had the upper hand the last two years, you can never drop your guard. So I made sure I stayed focused through out this week. Hutch was off at 2:32pm and then came my turn. I planned to make a quick start then defend my lead all the way to the line.”
“5-4-3-2-1 and I was away and feeling good putting the power onto the pedals and could soon see the speed was above 34 mph. I do all my intervals on this circuit and could soon see after the first four minutes I was on a ‘ride’ as I’d reached the furthest point I’d ever done in that space of time”!
“Now the adrenaline was flowing! I was on a mission and soon raced around to the major climb on the circuit where all my family and friends were. The noise was just unreal and I hardly felt the climb. The first time check came and I was 30 seconds up so knew that I just had to keep focused and not do anything stupid”.
“Giving it everything I had on the final lap, I used every ounce of energy I had all the way to the line stopping the clock in 40:43, over 40 second’s clear of Hutch’s 41:28. I have to say it felt great to defend my title from last year and add win number 26 to my palmeres.”
“I now have just one race left, a 25 mile TT and then I’m looking forward to resting. It’s been one hell of a year and something I will never forget. Its going to be hard to top it and I’m not sure I will. But once I’ve finished my last event, I’m going to kick back and enjoy it. Well for a few weeks!”
