World cycling body’s training and education centre to use Wattbikes to identify Junior and U23 talent
9 February 2015, Nottingham, UK / Aigle, Switzerland –
Athletes training at the UCI World Cycling Centre in Aigle, Switzerland, will now benefit from specific indoor training and testing sessions thanks to an agreement signed with British company Wattbike. The bikes installed at the UCI WCC will be used for training, monitoring and analysis.
The Wattbike being used in the Perform testing facility at St Georges Park where Raleigh – GAC riders such as George Pym were tested last week
The Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) will also place 15 Wattbikes in the athletes’ warm-up zone at the 2015 UCI Track Cycling World Championships in Saint-Quentin-En-Yvelines, France (18th – 22nd February).
In addition to being used for the training and testing of pro-athletes using the facility, the Wattbikes will also perform a key role in talent identification for Junior and U23 athletes throughout the UCI World Cycling Centre (WCC) global satellite centres.
Wattbike’s lead sport scientist, Eddie Fletcher will work closely with the UCI WCC’s coaches to help them create more tailored, effective and efficient programmes for UCI WCC athletes when using the Wattbike. Wattbike’s Rich Baker said: “This is a significant endorsement of the Wattbike and we look forward to working closely with the UCI WCC to advance its athletes’ performances.â€
The UCI WCC’s Belinda Tarling said: “The Wattbike has been proven as an effective training aid and will enable athletes attending this world-class facility and our satellite centres to get more from their training time.â€
The Wattbike was developed under the guidance of Peter Keen – former UK Sport performance director and head of British Cycling. It was used for the first time by team GB athletes in to the build-up to the 2008 Beijing Olympics and launched to the public in October 2008.
The bike delivers highly accurate real-time power monitoring and pedalling-technique analysis. The UCI will use this to identify athletes who have the right underlying physiology to excel in the sport. Since opening its doors in 2002, the UCI WCC has become internationally recognised, receiving the label “Olympic Training Centre” from the International Olympic Committee.
Based in Aigle, Switzerland, the centre includes a 200m cycling track and an Olympic BMX track. It has so far welcomed almost 900 athletes from 118 different countries. Its athletes have won 15 Olympic medals, including three golds, 33 World Championships titles and one Tour de France.
In addition to the athletes who train and compete in UCI WCC colours, the UCI WCC is also open to National Federations and individual athletes preparing for major international competitions. To date over 1,000 training camps have been held in this facility.
UCI WCC satellite facilities have been established in South Africa, South Korea, Japan and Argentina with more planned for the future.
Wattbike will also be hosting public demonstrations of its technology throughout the UCI Track Cycling World Championships in Saint-Quentin-En-Yvelines.
