From Jim Golden
As a former professional twice British Road Race Champion, Steve Joughin, renowned as the Pocket Rocket for his sprinting power has applied his unrivalled knowledge into a cycle team in his adopted North Staffordshire.
With five Milk Race stage wins, one in the Kellog’s Tour of Britain and numerous big wins both as an amateur and professional, he has plenty of experience to bring to bear. Pro Vision Clothing racing team, a team named after his cycle clothing business, has in a few months attracted members from all over the country, including his son Ben, who will be a part of a local based team of racers who have joined from several local clubs.
One exciting development is that six of Scotland’s leading riders are to ride in Pro Vision colours. It will be based in the premises in Stoke where Pro Vision design team clothing and display the cycling kit he provides for clubs and individuals. But plans to make it more than just a team with talks on training, nutrition etc planned.
Isle of Man born Steve already provides sponsorship for the highly successful Friends Life Women’s Tour and the Pedal Heaven pro team is anxious to put something back into the grass roots cycling scene. “I have had a lot out of cycling over the years,’ he said ‘ When I was in the Isle of Man cycling clubs were like a family with everyone pitching in to help out with organising, marshalling and that kind of thing. That is what I want to create here”.
“I know what some people think of racing teams that they are only takers that is not what we are about. We want to make a contribution, we will be providing help to a couple of locally organised races this year and then aim put on a road race next year”.
“Once word got out there about us setting up a club it was amazing how quickly people signed up paying £100 which gives them BC Silver membership , insurance, full Pro Vision race kit and discounts of the fast growing collection of Pro Vision clothing”.
“I am amazed at the response we have had from all over the country with a number of racers from the local area joining us. With our involvement with the Friend’s Life Women’s Tour showing our commitment to women’s racing, we are anxious to attract more women riders”.
The team are likely to be making their debut in their new colours in a new road race on the Lach Dennis circuit on March 1st when Mike Rothwell organises at 2/3/4 category race in what is hoped to be a reincarnation of the classic Manchester Velo early season race.
Despite not actively recruiting from local clubs he has attracted Wayne Lacey, who obtained his second category licence last year and is keen to get into some big races in addition to veteran races which will be targeted by local physio Mike Perry, a successful rider in his youth.
