News – Sheffield Uni Sponsors Local Crit
PRESS RELEASE
The organisational team for the Sheffield Grand Prix are pleased to announce that Sheffield Hallam University are headline sponsors for this years event. The university is the third largest in the UK, with more than 37,000 students, 4,170 staff and 747 courses. The main university campus is prominently situated on Arundel Gate, which is right on the circuit route.
The 2015 event will be branded as the Sheffield Hallam University Grand Prix and will again be part of the 2015 British Cycling Elite Circuit Series. For over a decade, the British Cycling’s Elite Circuit Series has brought together a handful of the very best town and city centre cycle races in the UK under the umbrella of the Elite Circuit Series. Membership of this exclusive group of events guarantees the highest quality field with some of Great Britain’s best professional and Olympic cyclists regularly participating. On Wednesday 22nd July 2015 the series visits Sheffield for the fourth time under the organisational team of Sheffrec Cycling Club, headed by Marc Etches and Mark Barry.
Sheffield Hallam is delighted to be the headline sponsor for the Sheffield Grand Prix, continuing their proud association with cycling and sport participation. The University has a long-established reputation in sport, running one of the UK’s largest ranges of sports degree programmes, and being home to three world-class sports research centres. In 2014 Sheffield Hallam became the first-ever University to be an official sponsor of The Tour de France Grand Départ, the three-day spectacular that saw the world’s most famous cycle race come to the UK. The event provided more than 200 volunteering and participatory roles for their students and staff, which will live long in the memory and helped to put the University firmly on the sporting map.
As with previous years, a supporting regional circuit race will precede the main elite event and will be open to 3rd and 4th category male and female riders. The event takes place in the heart of Sheffield’s city centre with early evening activity focused on the Peace Gardens and Pinstone Street. The first race will start at 7.00pm and the Sheffield Hallam University Grand Prix will bring the evening to a climax with the countries top professional riders racing around the city centre circuit for just over an hour.
Each lap of just over 1.4km includes a cobbled section and sweeps past famous landmarks such as the Crucible Theatre and Sheffield Town Hall. For the watching public, the Sheffield Hallam University Grand Prix is a free spectacle for all the family and brings World class athletes to the streets of the city.
Entries are now live, and all event information is available on an exciting new website which has been put together by Sheffield design agency and event partner, Blue Strawberry Elephant. The new site will be the hub for all event information and features links to all event partners including, Sheffield City Council, Harrison Cameras, Giant Sheffield, Langsett Cycles & Onimpex/Bioracer. Browns Bar and Restaurant will continue to provide the event with top quality hospitality and offer a fantastic area for refreshments overlooking the award winning Peace Gardens.
Event director, Marc Etches commented, “The partnership with Sheffield Hallam University is a perfect fit. They are an iconic Sheffield institution and will make our event even stronger for 2015. We are really looking forward to planning this year’s event and with the help from Sheffield Hallam University will again show that we are one of the best circuit races in the UK. I would like to thank Sheffield Hallam University for their support and also to Sheffield City Council who really help us deliver a now iconic event on the streets of Sheffield.â€
