Matt Bottrill back to his best after some difficult weeks with a win in Nev Crane Memorial where he was only ten seconds off his course record

News – Matt Bottrill back to his best
Matt writes … It’s fair to say over the last few weeks my head’s been all over the place and I’ve found it hard to push myself, ever since the British Time Trial Championships. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve done some good rides, but trying to really hurt myself in training has been very hard! But a few weekends away and knowing my mum is starting her cancer treatment in just next week, I feel mentally in a better place.
When you are at the top of your game, it’s only a few percent drop in performance and you can soon see your mental state of mind drop away. People that know me well will know I like to be in control of everything when it comes to cycling. I am pretty chilled with day-day life but cycling, whether it be my own racing or the riders I work with, I’m pretty full on!
But its when things don’t go to plan this is when your relationship working with the right people really come’s into its own. And this is when my coach Bob Tobin of cyclepowermeters.com makes me see sense and puts me on track again. And over the last 5 weeks his support has been amazing and I guess its why we always bounce back and get back on track.
With the National 25 and 10 coming up in the next few weeks, I feel I’m in a place of wanting to turn myself inside out to win. So lots of hard training to be completed but I’m ready to get back to my best.
So Sunday morning, I took part in the Nev Crane, Memorail 25 mile TT, promoted by Doug Hall, from Sleaford Wheelers. He always puts on a great event with some great prizes. The course is pretty flat starting in Donnington, but gets quite rolling in Osbournby before turning at Quarrington. The course is all single carriageway. But today was quite hard due to high winds and some rain showers.
My ride started at 9:50am, but I knew in the warm up I would be on for a ride. So I took the start line and was soon hitting some good numbers and was feeling great trying to control my breathing. By the half way point into the headwind, I was up on my main challenger Andy Jackson of Team Swift by 1 minute. So into the tailwind I just gave it everything I had and stopped the clock in 50:03. I was ten second’s down on my course record but this was a much better ride and gave me a winning margin of 1:23 over Andy.
Next stop in the Rugby CC- 10 mile event before the defence of my National 25 title. So tune in again to see how it goes
