The Great Britain Cycling Team continue on their road to qualifying riders for the Rio Olympic Games in Grenchen, Switzerland for the UEC European Track Championships. The championships, which take place from 14-18 October, mark the start of a massive year for the team, building through the UCI Track Cycling World Cup, UCI Track Cycling World Championships and ultimately to the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio.
Leading the way for Great Britain is the hour record holder, an Olympic champion and multi world champion who just happened to win the 2012 Tour de France, Sir Bradley Wiggins. He has one career goal remaining: winning a fifth gold medal in Rio.
The 35 year old Olympic champion will attempt his goal with the help of many of the riders from the Team Pursuit from the 2012 London Games as well as with youthful talents some 15 years younger than him, such as Oliver Wood, Mathew Gibson and Christopher Latham, who became the Under 23 European champions in Athens in July.
Wiggins headlines the 20-rider strong British “A-team†which is missing Ed Clancy who has been injured.
With a total of 21 sets of gold, silver, and bronze medals to be won, the days will break down into: Team Pursuit and Team Sprint (men and women), the Scratch race for men and the Points race for women on Thursday; Sprint (men and women), as well as the Points race for men and the Scratch race for women on Friday.
On Saturday, the omnium, individual pursuit, kilometre time trial, and elimination race for the men; and the 500 metre time trial for women. Sunday will see the Keirin (men and women), men’s Madison and Individual Pursuit; and the Omnium and Elimination races for the women.
For the 63 medals up for grabs, there will be 281 riders from 27 nations competing. The biggest track cycling nations such as France, Great Britain, Germany, Holland, Belgium and Russia will, like the Swiss, be bringing their top riders to the event.
The fact that these results will play an important part in the starting places for the Olympics means that teams are forced to bring only their best athletes to Grenchen. Consequently, some of the World Champions from Paris will not want to miss the appointment at the Grenchen track.
Among the stars who will be on hand racing in their rainbow jerseys at Grenchen will be François Pervis (Keirin and 1000-m time trial), Stefan Küng (pursuit), Lucas Liss and Kirsten Wild (Scratch), Bryan Coquard / Morgan Kneisky (Raleigh GAC) (Madison), Kristina Vogel (Sprint).
In addition, Briton Laura Trott, two time Olympic gold medalists in London, will try to add to her unrivalled collection of seven European track titles.
