Q & A with NFTO Junior Tour of Wales stage winner and second in Junior RR Champs, Robert Scott of the PH-MAS 2016 Junior Team

Feature: Q & A with Robert Scott
1. When will you start your road season and what will be the first race?
Robert: I will probably be starting my road season at the start of March riding the Clayton Velo Spring Classic, a race I started off with last season. It’s a great race to see how your fitness level is as there are some quality riders that come along so it is always a fast race!
2. What races will be your targets for 2016 and why?
Robert: My main targets for 2016 will be the Junior National Series events. I got some decent results with a few podiums and a win last season in the National Series so hopefully the 2016 series will bring more good results. There are a few dates in the series that I am really looking forward to racing but I’ll keep those to myself! Also the national Junior Championships is a big target. Coming second in it last year makes me want to get that one step higher this year!
3. How will you spend the time on the bike between now and your first race in training? Long miles or cutting back to do top end efforts?
Robert: I’ll be spending my time doing what I normally do, riding to work and college during the week, just hard sometimes! It’s important to get decent miles in building up to the season so I’ll still be getting some base miles in. Maybe I’ll chuck in a sprint or two.
4. What was your favourite Xmas present?
Robert: Probably some socks! Only because they’re waterproof and you get quite a lot of rain up here in Yorkshire so my feet stay nice and dry!
5. When it rains, which its doing a lot right now, is it turbo time or wrap up and get wet? (if the latter, what’s your favourite tip to stay dry in the rain)
Robert: A bit of both really. I will go out if it’s wet but you have to weigh up whether it’s worth it or not so sometimes the turbo is the best option. I’m not sure you can really stay dry with the weather up here. I just make sure I have enough layers on to stay warm.
6. If you could do any race in the world including the best ones in the world etc, what would it be and why?
Robert: My favourite race to ride would have to be Paris-Roubaix. It’s such a prestigious race and it’s always good to watch on TV. An obvious one would be the Tour, I don’t think anyone would not want to ride that!
7. What piece of food can you not do without where ever you are on the road during the season!
Robert: When I’m traveling to races I usually have a good supply of egg custards. It’s probably my favourite food but sometimes they will all go missing into Alex Folds belly! Perhaps they’d be good race food as well?
8. What is your favourite music track when warming up for a race or on the turbo?
Robert: I don’t often listen to anything before a race as I’m usually still getting ready when I should be on the rollers! But when I do I’ll listen to anything with a good beat to it. Maybe some 50 cent depending on how good I’m feeling.
9. If given the option, would you prefer normal brakes or disc brakes on your road bike?
Robert: I’d probably stick with normal brakes on my road bike. They just look a bit more appealing. I’m not sure you would have much more of an advantage with discs but I wouldn’t really know as I haven’t tried them yet.
10. What’s the spec of your race bike for 2016 and your favourite bits on it?
Robert: For 2016 the team and I will be riding the SHARK Aero Pro. This is a new make that came out late last year that will be sponsoring the team for 2016. I’ll be riding a 53 cm frame. I had the choice of a 53cm or a 56cm so I thought it would be a better fit. I’ll just have to put a long stem on it! It will be kitted out with Shimano 105 but we’ll be free to put any of our own components on.
