Feature: Arthur Tye
1. When will you start your road season and what will be the first race?
Arthur: Season kicks off proper for me in March with the Peter Young Memorial. I will throw in a couple of crits in the lead up to that and have been racing track occasionally at Lee Valley for some high intensity winter training.
2. What races will be your targets for 2016 and why?
Arthur: Quite a few targets this year so quite non-specific. Would like to win a National B and perform well at the Regional RR champs. Representing PMR at the Nationals would be great, as would heading over to Belgium/Northern France for some road racing out there. For me, 2016 is really about coming together as a team and developing our skills racing as a unit. I’m really looking forward to supporting a team mate taking a big win.
3. How will you spend the time on the bike between now and your first race in training?
Arthur: Having graduated I’ve discovered the joys of full time employment… goodbye constant 600km weeks on the bike. Having said that, I’ll still aim to ride 15 to 20 hour weeks with some time in the gym on top. Through the end of Feb, I’ll cut down the mileage and throw in more intensity.
4. What was your favourite Xmas present?
Arthur: Two pairs of sunnies from SwissEye turned up on our last team ride before Christmas which was great, just need to see some sun now. Aside from that, I’m damn pleased with my new JamBox – bluetooth speakers that you can take anywhere, great sound quality and impressively loud for a little thing.
5. When it rains, which its doing a lot right now, is it turbo time or wrap up and get wet?
Arthur: Turbo? Not for me. I had one… a long time ago, lent it to an old club mate (pre-PMR) and never saw it again. Got rollers stashed at the track but other than that it’s wrap up warm and get out on the road. So long as it’s not pissing it down as you leave the house it’s fine. Top tip for staying dry? Mudflaps. They’ve arrived on the scene with my old Dulwich club mates big time thanks to Rich Whitehorn (Raw Mudflaps). So long as the guy in front of you has them, you can finish a group ride in the wet without looking like you’ve been racing cyclocross. Revolutionary.
6. If you could do any race in the world including the best ones in the world etc, what would it be and why?
Arthur: Paris-Roubaix. Should probably get some proper experience of cobbles before putting that one out there but it’s just such an epic. Suffering at it’s finest. I would love to race it.
7. What piece of food can you not do without where ever you are on the road during the season!
Arthur: Rice cakes. Cinnamon, date and blueberry. Egg, ham and pepper. Raspberry and mint. Throw in whatever takes your fancy. Super tasty and cheap.
8. What is your favourite music track when warming up for a race or on the turbo?
Arthur: Ahh that’s a toughie, I find myself listening to anything from Pantera to the Blues Brothers pre-race… totally depends on the mood. In the past I’ve spent time putting together playlists of tunes with a certain BPM, 190-200 or 95-100 sort of thing. Top choice right now would probably have to be One by Rodrigo Y Gabriela, great build up.
9. If given the option, would you prefer normal brakes or disc brakes on your road bike?
Arthur: I would need to try out some disc brake road bikes before really making a call on the disc vs. rim brakes dilemma. Pros for rim brakes – can deal with brake rub on the fly, wheel changes are quicker. Pro for disc brakes – more control wet weather. Gimme a disc brake road bike and I’ll let you know!
10. What’s the spec of your race bike for 2016 and your favourite bits on it?
Arthur: Cannondale SuperSix Evo Hi-Mod with Dura-Ace groupset and FFWD F4R wheels. I love this frame. Super stiff, super light, can’t ask for more. Went from a 2007 Colnago C50, which I still love dearly, to that. Not comparable. The Cannondale is fast. Just got to make sure my legs are too.
