Feature – George Gori Q & A
1. When will you start your road season and what will be the first race?
George: It’s not really road but my first big race of the season is the Good Friday International Meet at Lee Valley Velopark. It’s been running for over 100 years – I think that’s even longer than Forest Gump ran for?
2. What races will be your targets for 2016 and why?
George: In addition to Good Friday, I’m aiming for some medals in the Masters Track Championships and to be competitive in the National Madison championships. It goes without saying that the local criterium “World Champs” at Hillingdon is a weekly target.
3. How will you spend the time on the bike between now and your first race in training?
George: A mix of both really. Thanks to Cannondale I have a CAAD10 track bike to race on indoors to keep me sharp and a Supersix Evo training bike to get me the long way round to the cafe!
4. What was your favourite Xmas present?
George: Being a bit of an Oakley geek, my girlfriend bought me a pair of the same spec frogskin sunglasses I had when I was a teenager!
5. When it rains, which its doing a lot right now, is it turbo time or wrap up and get wet?
George: The only time you’ll ever catch me riding indoors is on a velodrome so it’s outdoors for me! What can I say, Castelli are light years ahead of any other brand when it comes to keeping it snuggly out there. Considering the Italians don’t like the rain much, they’ve kind of nailed it really! Bravissmo.
6. If you could do any race in the world including the best ones in the world etc, what would it be and why?
George: It would have to be one of the Classics. I prefer racing start to finish in one go and the Classics are just so exciting to watch and I would love to be a part of that. I’d say maybe Milan – San Remo or Strada Bianchi Challenge. I guess Milan San Remo would suite me better as I love a good bunch kick.
7. What piece of food can you not do without where ever you are on the road during the season!
George: Everyone is going to point at me and shout “ketchup” but really if I had to live without one or the other I’d have to choose pasta!
8. What is your favourite music track when warming up for a race or on the turbo?
George: There’s a small rawk band called Supenik from Devon, where I grew up, that I often listen to and I always stick on their album called Econ when I warm up. Proper rifty baaay!
9. If given the option, would you prefer normal brakes or disc brakes on your road bike?
George: Normal brakes, normal! Did I say normal! I worry that sharper brakes will bring more crashes. My track bike doesn’t have any brakes and we all get on just fine.
10. What’s the spec of your race bike for 2016 and your favourite bits on it? (include a pic or two if you have them!)
George: We’ve got some very exciting looking Cannondale Super Six Evo Hi Mod race bikes with a Dura Ace mechanical groupset. This season we have a choice of wide rim aluminium and carbon wheels thanks to Mavic and Sigma Sport with some trick Fabric finishing kit.
Being a bit techy and a mechanic by trade, it’s the finer details I enjoy. I like the 25.4mm seat post to keep the ride smooth. It’s only really Cannondale doing stuff like this such as the external cables to keep it running smooth and to function when you need it most, pushing technology forward with the wider B/B shell and of course best looking chainset out there in the SiSL2 Hollogram spidering chainset. It’s also pretty cool that Stages make a power meter to fit. Can’t wait to use all this kit this season.
