Aberystwyth Cycle Festival returns for a seventh year on the late May Bank Holiday week (23-29th), and includes a new, gruelling winner takes all hill-climb challenge on a notoriously steep 25% gradient local climb – Cefn Llan.
With Friday evening’s Pearl Izumi Tour Series still fresh in the legs, the top UK professional riders will face a challenge from the best local amateurs as they vie for the £500 prize on offer, thanks to sponsor EDCO wheels.
Riders will start in pairs from midday on Saturday 28th May, with the faster rider progressing to the next round, and repechage events for the losers and categories for youths, vets and ladies. This means each rider will get more than one chance to conquer the climb.
480ft long with 96ft feet of climbing means an average gradient of 20.2%
Cefn Llan hill pronounced ‘Kevn Llan’, is the steepest in Aberystwyth, affectionately known by many local cyclists as Cardiac Hill due to its punishing 25% gradient in parts. Cefn Llan means behind the Church referring to St. Padarns Church. This is the largest Medieval Church in mid Wales, originally dating back to the 6th century. Rebuilt in 1257 after a fire, the enormity of the tower demonstrates how important this church was. This church also houses a copy of the welsh bible, translated in 1588.
Hill climb specialists are notorious for saving weight on their machines, down to the last gram. That’s why EDCO have developed their Supersport series of wheels which combine their superlight 9k/8mm twill weave carbon rims, carbon spokes and their Swiss made Victory hubs. The Neggia model in tubular format weighs in at just 950g for the pair! Visit them at www.edco-wheels.co.uk
The EDCO Hill Climb Knock-out Cup is hosted by Aberystwyth University at Brynamlwg Sports & Social Club. More details and info on affected road closures can be found here: http://www.abercyclefest.com/hill-climb
AberCycleFest is organised by volunteers from the town and is backed by Ceredigion County Council, Aberystwyth University, Aberystwyth Town Council, various private and third sector partners.
