Stage win for Endura Racing in Majorca

Iker Camano has won the first road stage for the UCI ranked Cinturón Ciclista in Majorca and now sits second overall. The stage saw four riders form British teams in the top 10.

Iker Camaño won Thursday’s stage from a 4-up sprint after a long day in the Serra de Transmuntana mountain range. Iker was part of a three strong chase of a lone leader, closing down a one minute deficit at the day’s high point at the Coll de Puig Major just before the race hit the flat roads near Pollença. Iker moved to second on GC, 15 seconds down on the leader and retained the points jersey.

Speaking after the stage, Iker said: The tactic for today was easy, we must be in the front of the peloton on Puig Major, the most important climb of the stage. Before this climb we had Soller, another mountain, and again the most important thing here was the position because the descent was really difficult.

On the Coll de Puig Major, Belda [the race leader] decided to make an attack. Valjavec and I followed him, but he had another speed and I decided to make the climb myself with Valjavec. In the last kilometres of the climb a Joker rider [Wilmann] and we decided that the best thing is work together, because the diference was around 2 minutes at the top of the mountain.

We made the descent really fast, there was 40km to go and there was a headwind. The diference was around a minute with 20km to go and we continued working together and we have seen him when only 10km to go. Finally we took him into the last 2km and in the last km I took the first position. 500m to go nobody moved and I decided start the sprint 150m before the finish. I had good luck and crossed the finish in first position.

News from Motorpoint makes good progress in Cinturón Ciclista on Majorca
The Motorpoint Pro-Cycling Team continues to make good progress in the 46th Cinturón Ciclista Internacional a Mallorca. Inspite of soaring temperatures, which touched 28C during the day, the six-strong team continued to lead the charge for the Brits, along with Endura, as they travelled the 148.5km between Port d’Alcúdia and Port de Pollença. Ian Bibby and Marcin Bialoblocki were once again in the thick of the action, forming part of a nine-strong chasing group on the  mammoth Coll de Puig Major, that drove hard to catch a four-strong breakaway group, with Ian Bibby coming second in the bunch sprint.

The spoils on the day went to Endura’s Iker Camaño. Ian Bibby and Marcin Bialoblocki lie 5th and 6th respectively in the overall classification as the race heads to Playa de Muro for the slightly easier Stage 3 on Friday.
Says Chris Truett, Director Sportif of the Motorpoint Pro-Cycling Team: “Another good day in the saddle for the boys. They responded well to the early break and worked extremely hard to drive down the time, which at one point was over three minutes, to just over one minute on the finish line.”
