News: Great Result for Jake Hales

Newport Pagnell’s Jake Hales (Team Corley Cycles – Cervelo – Alpha RC) scored one of his best results ever on Sunday in one of the biggest races of last weekend’s calendar as he came home in 6th place in the Glade CC Spring Road Race.

It was a great result all round for the Stacey Bushes based team with Ashley Cox also finishing in the top ten, his eighth place adding to the 15th place finish for Simon Gaywood who was followed immediately by Simon Henley making that four Team Corley riders in the top sixteen. Sunday’s results added to the good run of form being shown by Team Corley riders earlier this month with Hales and Roy Chamberlain taking second and third positions in the Thames Velo Road Race whilst Simon Gaywood finished in 14th place in the Dengie Marshes Tour “Hell of the East”.

Based on the undulating roads around Saffron Walden, Sunday’s Glade CC event was run over 8 laps of an 11.5 mile circuit and all the nearly 60 competitors benefitted from the weekend’s warm spring sunshine. At just over half the race completed, Cox was one of the small group of riders who finally managed to detach themselves from the high speed bunch but their efforts were rained in by a determined field who were not willing to let anything slip away.

As other attacks launched themselves off the front, the now trio of Team Corley riders, Cox having been joined by Hales and Gaywood, were forced by the other riders to give chase. With the race moving into its final stages, eventual winner Wouter Sybrandy clipped off the front with less than half a mile to go and with tired legs taking their toll, neither Hales nor Cox were able to give chase and so had to settle for the 6th and 8th place finishes.
