Report: Maldon and District CC Grass Track

Fergus Muir writes about the Maldon and District CC Grass Track Meeting, Lower Plume School, Maldon, Essex on  Sat 2nd July 2011

George Wood ((Maldon & DIstrict CC) leads the string in the Senior race

The Maldon and District CC’s first open track meeting of recent years finished with a closely-fought eight kilometre in which Alex Wise pipped Jack Gibson by a narrow margin. Wise, a former Dave Rayner Fund beneficiary, has returned from racing on the Continent and now works as Bike Club Youth Development Officer in nearby Colchester, encouraging cycling in schools.

Gibson is a Maldon member studying in Wales and currently racing in the colours of Cardiff Ajax. Other Maldon members featuring in the meeting at the Lower Plume School included George Wood with several Youth wins and his mother Sue Wood with the biggest share of wins in the women’s races, though Maldon’s Rebecca Hammond took the three-lap handicap. The CC Ashwell contingent was spearheaded by Andrew Leverton who won the 800m scratch final. Sid Charlton (King’s Cliffe Flyers) dominated the tricycle events, though Martin Badham (CC Breckland) took the trike handicap by a whisker from Fergus Muir (TA East).
