Report/Photos: Anna Fischer wins Essex Giro Two-Day

Abus Nutrixxon rider from Germany, Anna Fischer, has won the Jo Bruton National Series event, the Essex Two Day after an eventful final stage.

Going into the stage with an almost three minute lead, race leader Anna Fischer tweeted in the morning “Todays motto: attack is the best defense!” but it was the rider in third overall Rohan Battison (For Viored) who went on the attack with Lowri Bunn (RC Abergavenny). “After a lap, we had about three minutes on the bunch” says Rohan Battison of the For Viored Brookvex team.  “We got stopped at the finish line because the men had caught the women and within half a lap of the race being started, we had a four minute lead”.

“Lowri was absolutely fantastic and we worked together so well. There was no competition between us for the sprints as we had decided to keep riding whatever. By the time we got to the finish, the lead had shrunk to 1.50 so we lost two minutes on that last lap because we were both really suffering in the strong wind.”

Talking about the battle for the stage, Rohan said, “on the final climb, Lowri ramped up the pace by sticking it in the big ring and there was nothing I could do. I just said ‘Lowri, I can’t come round you, celebrate your win’.”

“Finishing second is absolutely fantastic.  I am rather pleased with that! This is definitely my best result so far. I have never really had an opportunity before where people were riding for me, normally I ride for others.”

The Jo Bruton series was won by the rider who was 4th overall, Junior Lucy Garner.

Jo Bruton Series

1. Lucy Garner, Motorpoint

DAY 1

Fischer and Silver medallist from the European Track Championships, Elinor Barker (Cardiff Ajax) tied after the first stage time time trial but it was all Fischer in the afternoon as she and Lucy Garner went on the attack before Garner fell away from Fischer who carried on chasing the peloton which she lapped.

Chasing her was trio of riders, Garner, Rohan Battison and Rachel Bamford of Dirtwheels Cycles of Otley . They never managed to catch Fischer however with Garner winning the sprint for the line to finish second and move into second overall.

Speaking to Lucy Garner (Motorpoint) afterwards, the Jo Bruton Women’s RR Series leader, she explained how after starting the move, Fischer joined her and how the Abus Nutrixxon rider was really strong on the hill circuit. “I stayed with her for quite a while” Lucy says “before I dropped back to the peloton. I then attacked to join the two girls who were chasing”.

Lucy added that whilst there had been little wind for the time trial in the morning, there was a lot of wind for the road stage and that made the chase very hard. Having just returned from the European Track Championships, Lucy said that she wasn’t looking forward to the racing because she didn’t feel great in training but once the racing got going, all that was forgotten and she just got on with it. Lucy is now looking forward to the next stage with Motorpoint teammate Hannah Barnes who had helped Lucy during stage 2 by keeping on eye on any dangerous counter attacks from the peloton.

Meanwhile, Rohan Battison of the For Viored Brookvexd team, explained that it was probably her best ride ever and she was pleased that at last, a break she had managed to get into,  had stuck. The race, Rohan said, was hard with Penny Rowson of Horizon Fitness/Prendas going from the gun. It was the break of Garner and Fischer though that set the alarm bells ringing and Rohan escaped with a rider from Herbalife Wheelbase who apparently was big ringing the climb she was so strong. That strength in the break, made all the more when Garner joined them, saw the trio keep the gap to Fischer to half a lap and whilst none of the GC results were available at the time of writing, Rohan thinks she’ll be in fourth overall and ready for the final stage on a course she says suits her.
