Preview: British Time Trial Championships

No less than three Team Sky riders are entered for the British Time Trial Championships in the East Midlands on Sept. 4. Alex Dowsett (former European Time Trial Champion), Steve Cummings and former British Road Race champion Geraint Thomas are all down to ride the race.

They’ll be taking on the challenge of the home based riders such as Michael Hutchinson, Matthew Bottrill and Dowsett’s training partner over in Essex, Russell Hampton (Sigma Sport).

Cummings, winner of stage 3 of the Tour of Algarve this year, has confirmed he’s riding and that the dust has been wiped off the TT bike which hasn’t seen much use. Dowsett meanwhile doesn’t let his TT bike standstill long enough for any dust to come anywhere near it and this weekend will doing a 25 in Hampshire to test the form.

On offer to the winner is the British Champion’s jersey that Bradley Wiggins has given such great exposure to in Europe this year. That is enough to make riders want to race the event says Alex.
“You get to ride in that jersey for the whole year and it’s something to wear with honour. To have that jersey on your back coming into the Olympic year would be a real pleasure for me. And, Sky will make us the white bike, the white kit and the white helmet, so it’s certainly got its advantages winning!”

Alex Dowsett

Alex explained that riding the event was his wish, not his teams, and not just because of the champion’s jersey being on offer. “I knew I wasn’t going to be racing over that weekend so right from the outset it was a target for me especially with Worlds selection coming up. If I can really turn out a good ride, then hopefully I’ll have something to fight my corner with to get a ride at the Worlds.”

Have the Sky riders competed against each other this year I asked? “No” says Alex. “Not with any of them. I don’t think Steve has done a time trial all year so he really is an unknown! Geraint meanwhile has always turned out bloody good time trials so beating him will be a real tall order especially as he looked really comfortable in the Tour de France and I imagine he’s come out of that very well.”

“It will be a tough race and you can never discount the likes of Matt Brottrill and Michael Hutchinson. Botrill did a ‘47’ or ‘46’ during the week and Hutchinson is Hutch, seriously quick. I have also heard the course has a lot of drag strips so it will suit Michael for sure.”

“It’s on small roads but they are well surfaced and pretty flat so I have heard there will not be so much of a technical element, more of a head down and driving as hard as you can which suits me!”

In the Women’s event, Olympic champion Rebecca Romero is down to ride as is the rider who was second to her in Beijing, Wendy Houvenaghel. The biggest threat though will come from new 25 mile record holder Julia Shaw. Other names on the start sheet include rowing legend James Cracknell riding the Masters event.

Julia Shaw.
