Session 2

Two medals for Great Britain in the final session made it a day to remember as Sir Chris Hoy won the blue ribbon event, the Sprint in two straight rides after a tough a semi final which took three rides to get through while Dani King was second in the Omnium, a performance that gives GB more options for that event in the coming competitions leading to the Olympics. In the Women’s Keirin, Rebecca James was 9th after finishing third in the minor final won by Krupectaite.

Hoy told Sky Sports “I’m very very pleased. I was sick in Apeldoorn and I’d been ill the week before I came here. I had to go home, recover, and bounce back and I have done that here. I was second in the Keirin too and it has given me a lot of pride to get GB a gold medal as we haven’t had one here yet.”

Chris also highlighted the strength of the competition he was up against. A look at the times and the number of riders who went under 10 seconds, is an example that sprinting is becoming more and more competitive. “This is just missing Gregory Bauge but apart from that it is a World Championship field with the level of racing and how close it is. It is a great competition and it is nice to win it.”

On his Facebook page, he told people, “Gold!!! It was a tough day at the office though; I made a mistake in the first heat of the semi and went 1-0 down against Forstemann. Battled back to win 2-1 with less than 10 minutes between rides 2 and 3! Final against Dmitriev was just as tough although I won 2-0.”

“He beat Jason, Sireau and Shane Perkins along the way so it was a big win for me. Dani King rode superbly for silver in the Women’s Omnium and Matt was 7th, Jason 10th in sprint. Becky did well after her crash to make the minor final ending up 9th. Tired legs all round!”

Chris will now go back to basics with a training camp in Australia (Perth) before building up for the London World Cup and the World championships in Australia.

Session 1
Sir Chris Hoy sprinted his way through the early rounds of the Men’s Sprint to win a place in the semi finals. Chris (9.971) was the fastest British rider in qualifying with a sub 10 second ride, the second time during the week he had done that. The four time Olympic Champion, in Sky colours, was one of three British riders in the competition. Olympic Silver medallist from the sprint, Jason Kenny qualified 9th (10.108) and Matthew Crampton 10th (10.115).

French rider Kevin Sireau was fastest 9.938. The three Brits had varying fortunes in the competition however. Jason Kenny went out of the main competition in the early rounds and found himself in the B finals for pl;aces 9 and 10 and he ended the competition in 10th after losing his B final to Germany’s Rene Enders 2:0. Matt Crampton meanwhile, come up against teammate in the British squad, Chris Hoy in the quarter final where he lost that round 2:0 to the Olympic champion, relegating the European Keirin Champion Crampton to the Minor Final (5-8) where he was 3rd(7th overall).

In the Women’s Omnium, Dani King began her second day in style with a victory in the Pursuit which lifted her to second overall. Like Laura Trott who has until now been GB’s main Omnium rider, Dani was part of the Sprint programme with GB and her speed on the boards showed as she added to her Flying Lap victory with one in the Pursuit. In the Women’s Keirin, won so sensationally by Victoria Pendleton in the Euros a few weeks ago, it was the turn of the young riders on the GB programme to have a go. Jess Varnish and Becky James were the riders in GB colours and both failed to get through the first round heats for different reasons.

Becky crashed in her heat and then promptly bounced back up to win her Repechage to go through to the second round. Varnish meanwhile came up against former World Champion Clara Sanchez in her heat and was unable to stop the French rider relegating her to the reps where Jess was again second, this time to Russian Gnidenko.
