Give us Five! Riders from Cycle Premier RT talk Winter Training

Jon Mozley and the riders from the Cycle Premier Racing Team are the final team to talk winter training for 2011!

Jon Mozley

VeloUK: Have you started your winter training and if so, how long did you spend off the bike post season and how many hours a week would you spend now training?
Jon Mozley: My winter has started, however its been a long road back to fitness for me as I haven’t raced since the Road Nationals in June since the collapse of my 2011 team. I think it was the longest period I’ve spent off a bike in 20 years. I’m also training in a complete different style to previous years this winter whilst trying to fit it all in around work. So far I’ve been purposely training a lot less than normal but much more specifically.

VeloUK: What is a typical weekday ride for you (how long and what intensity) and what sort of rides do you do on a weekend (how long and what intensity)?
Jon Mozley: It all depends on my work schedule. I could get a 4hr ride done in the Peaks with set efforts, nothing too maximal yet. Or, it could be a 1hr roller session at 6am before work. I’m very busy with work at the moment over Xmas so I’m just doing what I can with what time I have.

VeloUK: Do you ride Xmas day or New Years day?
Jon Mozley: traditionally I do, more to get out of the way of the stress of Christmas Day. I’m the modern day scrooge! However this year I’m going to suck it up and help my mum out. As for new years day, I probably will to get out of doing any tidying up from the night before!

VeloUK: Do you intend to go to a training camp abroad and if so, what would be a typical training camp there in terms of the time spent training and the type of training rides they would be?
Jon Mozley: Nah, no training camp for me. I live on the border of the Peak district so I’m very lucky. I believe if you race on British roads in typical British weather, Britain is the place to train. Of course if it was all expenses paid my attitude may be different – LoL!

VeloUK: Finally, what will be your first races for 2012?
Jon Mozley: I still haven’t decided on this yet, it could be Eddie Soens, Severn Bridge Road Race or just a local Darley Moor. It will depend on what my team manager wants me to do. I’ll just be happy to be back racing again after such a long time out.

Tom Black (Isle of Man)

VeloUK: Have you started your winter training and if so, how long did you spend off the bike post season and how many hours a week would you spend now training?
Tom BlackI’ve certainly started training again and I am currently getting in about 12-15hours a week. I had all of October off and went on holiday for a week with my girlfriend. At the moment I am juggling training around my work but in the new year I’ll start ramping up the training.

VeloUK: What is a typical weekday ride for you (how long and what intensity) and what sort of rides do you do on a weekend (how long and what intensity)?
Tom Black I get out for a couple of hours before work in the weekday. There is always someone out and we always meet same time same place. A lot of the top guys are away on GB Academy or with their respective teams so it’s great when they’re home, we have an amazing training group. At the weekends you get anything from 20-40 riders out. There are usually two groups which leave within half an hour of each other and we meet up at the same cafe so you can imagine it gets quite hectic there.

VeloUK: Do you ride Xmas day or New Years day?
Tom Black I won’t be riding Christmas Day this year but I am down to ride New Years Day – that’s always good banter. I have some time off work over the festive period so its an ideal opportunity to put a good block in I just hope the snow doesn’t come down.

VeloUK: Do you intend to go to a training camp abroad and if so, what would be a typical training camp there in terms of the time spent training and the type of training rides they would be?
Tom Black I’m off to Majorca early Feb. Last year I got a good 10 day block in which I found really beneficial. Back home I train around my work commitments making it long days so it will be good to have that focus on the bike with no distractions.

VeloUK: Finally, what will be your first races for 2012?
Tom Black We start at the Eddie Soens Memorial in March and from there it’s preparing for the Premier Calendar series from April. I’ll be riding the National 25 in June so that’s a big target. I’ve been lucky to have support from the Isle of Man Sports Council over the last few years which helps with travel off the Island. It’s very expensive so you have to choose each one very carefully making sure your in good shape.

Declan Byrne

VeloUK: Have you started your winter training and if so, how long did you spend off the bike post season and how many hours a week would you spend now training?
Declan: I had three weeks off the bike at the end of the season (October). I started my winter training back in early November by doing around 10 hours a week and now I have built it up to between 15-20 hours.

VeloUK: What is a typical weekday ride for you (how long and what intensity) and what sort of rides do you do on a weekend (how long and what intensity)?
Declan: My typical weekday ride in December will be 3-4 hours at a low intensity (base miles). On the weekend I will do a sweet spot session on the turbo at a high intensity and up to four hours on Sunday.

VeloUK: Do you ride Xmas day or New Years day?
Declan: Depends on the weather but if there’s no snow or ice, its always a big ride as there is hardly any traffic.

VeloUK: Do you intend to go to a training camp abroad and if so, what would be a typical training camp there in terms of the time spent training and the type of training rides they would be?
Declan: Yes, I’m off to Majorca on the 17th of December for six weeks. I have booked an apartment in Port Pollensa and I am aiming for around about 20-30 hours a week training. I normally do three big days and then an easy day and will have an easy week somewhere in the middle of the six weeks.

VeloUK: Finally, what will be your first races for 2012?
Declan: My first race will be the Eddie Soens Memorial in early March.

George Moore:

VeloUK: Have you started your winter training and if so, how long did you spend off the bike post season and how many hours a week would you spend now training?
George Moore: I have started winter training after I had three weeks off the bike after the season finished. Now I spend about 20 hours on the bike.

VeloUK: What is a typical weekday ride for you (how long and what intensity) and what sort of rides do you do on a weekend (how long and what intensity)?
George Moore: A typical weekday ride for me would be 5 hours going at a good pace but not too hard this time of year. Weekend would be 4 – 5hours group ride with local elite riders and good quality riders so speed is faster but normally have a cafe stop until after Christmas.

VeloUK: Do you ride Xmas day or New Years day?
George Moore: Yes I do ride Christmas and New Year. Can only do a short ride on Christmas this year though as Christmas dinner is at 12. New Year is normally mountain biking up Cannock Chase with a few friends and family.

VeloUK: Do you intend to go to a training camp abroad and if so, what would be a typical training camp there in terms of the time spent training and the type of training rides they would be?
George Moore: Yes, training camp in Portugal this year. Where we are staying is very hilly so most rides will encounter a few mountains. Haven’t sorted a training plan out for the camp yet but will have it sorted in the coming weeks.

VeloUK: Finally, what will be your first races for 2012?
George Moore: First race of 2012 is Eddie Soens Memorial race.

Jacob Martin

VeloUK: Have you started your winter training and if so, how long did you spend off the bike post season and how many hours a week would you spend now training?
Jacob: I’ve started my winter training and I’m eager to start racing again after two and a half weeks off at the end of October. I’m currently doing between 13 and 20 hours on the bike each week.

VeloUK: What is a typical weekday ride for you (how long and what intensity) and what sort of rides do you do on a weekend (how long and what intensity)?
Jacob: I tend to do one mega long, steady ride in the week, longest I’ve done so far is 5:40 hours, solo! Must get some hard man points for that! I haven’t started doing any high intensity work yet, that fun is to come in the next few weeks!

VeloUK: Do you ride Xmas day or New Years day?
Jacob: I might sneak out for a few laps of Richmond Park before everyone is awake on Christmas Day. I’m not planning on riding on New Years day. I raced last year a little worse for wear and regretted it very soon after the finish!

VeloUK: Do you intend to go to a training camp abroad and if so, what would be a typical training camp there in terms of the time spent training and the type of training rides they would be?
Jacob:I’m in Majorca from the 20th of January to the 3rd of February where I’ll be looking to do some specific sessions, as well as good long miles. And maybe get down to 5% for the first race of the year.

VeloUK: Finally, what will be your first races for 2012?
Jacob: My first race of 2012 will be the Perf’s Pedal race.

Still early days and I’m up to about 20 hours of training a week…. once the New Year starts, trainings get more specific …

VeloUK: What is a typical weekday ride for you (how long and what intensity) and what sort of rides do you do on a weekend (how long and what intensity)?
Chris Pritchard: Standard weekday ride would be about three hours low intensity. Weekend the same …

VeloUK: Do you ride Xmas day or New Years day?
Chris Pritchard: Training falls on Christmas day this year but it’s only an hour… nice and easy…

VeloUK: Do you intend to go to a training camp abroad and if so, what would be a typical training camp there in terms of the time spent training and the type of training rides they would be?
Chris Pritchard: I have no intention of attending a training camp

VeloUK: Finally, what will be your first races for 2012?
Chris Pritchard: Eddie Soens
