Chasing Rodriguez for second and third on the stage were Vincenzo Nibali (Liquigas-Cannondale) and Danilo Di Luca (Acqua & Sapone) while overall leader Chris Horner (Radioshack-Nissan-Trek) crossed the finish in fourth place and maintained his race lead by five seconds over Roman Kreuziger of Astana. Nibali earned the six-second time bonus for his second place finish, moving him within six seconds of Chris Horner.

The course for Monday’s stage was a series of six local laps in Offida that included a climb just before each pass through the finish line. A breakaway initially included seven riders, but once they entered the circuit, the laps ticked over and tired legs came into play, with several riders dropping off along the way. Team Liquigas-Cannondale were consistently eyeing the bonus seconds available at the final finish line. The Italian team did a great deal of the work to bring the break back, finally reeling in the last few guys at 5km to go.

Attacks then quickly followed, with race leader Chris Horner mindful of who was going up the road, again measuring his effort as the group approached the finish line. At 1km to go Rodriquez, launched his attack and there was no urgency to chase him down strangely enough. Perhaps all the climbing in this years race was having an effect on the rider’s legs and morale!

“I´m very happy with today´s victory” said Rodriguez. “On the last two stages, I was a little disappointed, they were good courses for me but I couldn´t win because my rivals were in better shape. Instead, today in theory, it was a better stage for Oscar Freire, more suitable to his characteristics, but when I saw he was not ahead, I tried to win.”

“My only chance was to anticipate my moment of attack and attack from afar, because in the bunch, there was Peter Sagan and I couldn´t compete with him in a sprint. It was an important victory: now I´m more persuaded the work we did from Tour of Oman to Tirreno-Adriatico was good. I proved I´m getting better and better and for Vuelta al Pais Vasco and I´ll be ready for taking some other good results. I won´t go to Milan-Sanremo, but I´m sure we can do a great race: Freire is in a great shape, so I think he has many chances to win his fourth Spring Classic”.

Tuesday Showdown
With only six seconds separating Chris Horner and the two riders behind him, the final time trial on Tuesday will be a battle for seconds to earn the victory in Tirreno-Adriatico just as it was in Paris Nice on Sunday where Bradley Wiggins had yet another historic win. Horner likes his chances in the Italian classic.

“It was again a very difficult day,” said Chris Horner after receiving his third blue leader’s jersey. “This course wasn’t suited to me. You come into the bottom of the climb to a complete stop and then you have to accelerate out of the last corner up a very hard steep gradient. It’s not super steep, just a long drag. When Rodriquez went, I thought it was Oscar Freire until I got to the podium. It was that kind of stage.”

“It’s going to be an exciting race for tomorrow,” said Horner. “We have three very, very strong riders all very close on GC. I’m sure the fans will get to watch a good race. I’d like to go to bed early but that probably won’t happen so maybe I can sleep in late. Mentally you just go with the flow. Life goes on whether you win or lose for sure. So I’ll try to relax tonight and then in the morning as the race approaches, hopefully I’ll remain calm and easy.”

Team Sky
The British team meanwhile made the headlines more for who was leaving the race rather than what they were doing in the race. As the race started the finishing laps, Sky riders started to climb off including Mark Cavendish and Bernie Eisel (Team Sky) as they looked ahead to Milan-San Remo next weekend. Their team-mate Chris Sutton also abandoned after succumbing to knee issues.

After the stage Sports Director Servais Knaven explained the team’s decision to take Cavendish and Eisel out of the firing line. “It was a really hard day today. With an eye on Milan-San Remo we took the decision to stop today for Cav and Bernie. CJ is also having a bit of a problem with his knee so that is why he pulled out. “But the guys feel they are ready for San Remo and they didn’t want to go too deep, take any risks and require the extra recovery.”

Knaven also explained why the world champion was off the front briefly, adding: “Cav was off the front for a bit at the start. It wasn’t on purpose but he went quickly down the descent at the start and they let him go so that was why he was in the breakaway. They were taken back by the climb but it was a really hard day today. It’s been hard all week. We have the time trial tomorrow with Jez, Mat and Ian and then the guys go to Milan to prepare for the race. They are really motivated for that so it looks good for Saturday.”

Cavendish wasn’t the only high profile withdrawal as the DNF’s and DNS’s show below. Another former winner of Milan San Remo, Matt Goss didn’t event start the stage and nor did Phillipe Gilbert or Edvald Boasson-Hagen. Lars Boom, Tour of Britain winner last year was another non-starter as sickness or the thought of a Monument (San Remo) on the weekend occupies the minds of the star riders in the peloton in Italy.
