STAGE 2 Girvan Circuit Race – 16 Miles – Start 16:30

Endura’s domination in British racing continued today with Scott Thwaites adding to the victory of Erick Rowsell on the days first stage to sweep the board for Endura Racing. After two stages, they have the Yellow jersey, the Endura Points jersey and the King of the Mountains jersey plus the two stage wins.

The 16 mile circuit race was fairly uneventful although the number of riders being shelled said a lot about the pace at the front as the teams battled to put a stop to Endura Racing’s domination. It wasn’t to be though and after taking care of Erick Rowsell to protect their yellow jersey, the Endura Racing team then turned their attention to winning the stage and did that too.

Scott Thwaites said afterwards “That was good. It went to plan and Endura did a good job again and controlled the race. I started the first few laps nice and steady, to get ourselves in the race and make sure we had a presence at the front and covering anything that went.”

After last year’s near miss, Endura Racing now find themselves defending three jerseys, Alex Wetterhall (KoM), Erick Rowsell (Yellow) and Scott Thwaites (Points)

“Then in the second half of the race, we started massing on the front and just rolling through and keeping a nice tempo and as were all there, it kept us all out of trouble as well keeping the pressure on those behind.”

“Coming into the finish, the guys did a great job of covering any moves as Node 4 were firing riders off to try and put us off but the lads dealt with it real well. Coming into the finish, Rob (Partridge) set it up over the last few laps and then Dean Windsor and Ian Wilkinson were still there. Wilko (Ian Wilkinson) did a big turn and then Dean Windsor kicked out of the corner and got me a bit of a gap and I knew the finish well.”

“I made mistake this morning on this finish hesitating and waited too long because some people may think it is quite a long straight but when you are sprinting, it’s not as long as it looked. I let Dean do 50 metres out of the corner and then I dumped it on the 11 and went past him and kept going to the finish and I’m really happy with that”.

The Stage Route

After only a couple of hours recuperation from the efforts of the opening stage, the competitors will be back at Victory Park in South Park Avenue to line up for the circuit race, or ‘criterium’. This is the same stage that proved so popular with spectators over many years in the event’s former guise as the Girvan 3-Day Cycle Race.

Fans are up close to the action as some riders battle for the win – others simply to stay in contention. Stage 1 deficits of seconds can turn to minutes in the space of a few laps as the high speed stage takes its toll. Green jersey contenders will scrap over the points to be won at the Endura Hot Spot Sprints at the end of laps five and ten. Can the Stage 1 leader hang on to yellow?
