With the men’s National 10 mile championship just one week away, Matthew Bottrill (Drag2Zero) won the South Pennine CC 25 mile time trial in a time of 48.30, to beat his nearest challenger Matthew Sinclair (Lutterworth cycle center) by just under two minutes. For Bottrill this came after completing the hardest week training he had ever undertaken.

He said afterwards “today’s race really went well and I surprised myself with how I felt. This week’s training has been hell and I have pushed myself to the limit of the time I have spare and to the mental edge of destruction, but if I want to win national championships then you have to push yourself to the limits.”

“Bob Tobin my coach checked the weather reports for today’s race so we knew it was not going to be a float day. So that meant some high intensive threshold intervals the day before. So I felt great going to the turn but coming back I felt smashed! But all I can do now is look forward to next weekend and know I have done everything I can to get near peak condition. The main target for me will be the National 25 and 50.”

Working full time and having a family, we asked Bottrill what it takes to race at top level. “I think the key for anybody is be organised and plan ahead; you always need to be thinking about the next day. I try and plan everything for the week in my head, and I think to get the most out of yourself you need to be like that.”

“So for training, I always make sure Im well fulled before I go out, but while your out training you need to be thinking about the following days session so drink well, and have a recovery drink or something with high protein, once you return, the best time is 10 minutes once you return. Then drink plenty of fluids. I think the biggest key is to be realistic about the amount of time you have to train, and if you have only 45 mins – 1hr then you have to make the most of that time. That’s when training with a power meter makes a massive difference!!”
