“Boom†roared Tony Gibb as he won the Archer Spring Criterium by two lengths to prove he is still King of Hillingdon circuit when it matters.

And when there is a £100 first prize it matters to Tony! Added to which he won the same race last year.
This time there were 88 other starters to try, but fail, to prove he was past it now that he is just enjoying his racing outside of team sponsorship and concentrating on his work with Eurosport TV and being national coach for Antigua and working in other Carribean islands.

It seems a hard life but somebody has to do it! So Tony flies off on Wednesday after riding in the Hillingdon Tuesday series the day before. The massed bunch sprint of virtually the whole field of starters came at the end of the race at an average of 28mph which meant that the many attempts to break away by small groups came to nought unless they were going for one of the frequent primes.
Successful among these prime winners were junior riders Hector Lancaster and Fraser Martin, Perth United CC, who had made the long journey down for this race and the national series meeting the next day at the Redbridge circuit.
It is thought the field of 88 starters from an entry of 99 is the largest yet at Hillingdon, not only attracted by the £500 prize list but perhaps by the Archer RC Criterium’s history of winners including Bradley Wiggins, Roger Hammond, David Millar, among many who progressed to championship level.
Graham Robins Report
Tony Gibb produced another storming sprint to win the Archer GP for the second consecutive year. With bunch still all together Tony pulled clear with 300 meters to go crossing the line well adrift. On what had been the best day of the year so far a large field assembled for the 38 lap race at the Hillingdon Cycle Centre?
With such a large entry the race did not really split up too much as several riders tried to distance themselves from the rest. The first to show and continue to attack was Chris Morrison (London Dynamo). He tried on several occasions to get away either on his own or with someone else but on each time the bunch pulled them back.
The most anyone got clear of the bunch was a handful of seconds but never enough to make it stick. So at the end of 38 entertaining laps it all came down to the last few hundred meters, with Tony the strongest.
Category 4
The mornings racing got underway with racing for fourth cat riders and all though the race stayed together for most of the hours racing the finish sprint was a one team dominance. The three riders from LBRCC-Solgar, Matt Rushton, Tim Edwins and Stuart King completed a 1-2-3 right on the line.
