Team Press Release
Shropshire-based cycling racing team is celebrating a successful first season after it achieved its goal of becoming the top racing team in the West Midlands.
The Paramount Performance Cycling Racing Team was set up earlier this year after a number of promising riders were handpicked from within the Shrewsbury-based Paramount Cycle Racing Team club.
The club won the West-Midlands points classification and individual members celebrated many wins throughout the racing season. Paramount CRT also came top in the club ranking.
“I think the team gave club members the inspiration to perform as well. It’s brilliant we were the top team and the top club overall,†said Mike Jones, who owns family-run business Stan’s Cycles in Shrewsbury, and is the team’s Director Sportif.
The team is made up Elliot Jones, 18, from Shrewsbury; Josh Williams, 20, from Whittington, and Chris Wilkinson, 20, also from Shropshire, as well as experienced riders Rich Watson and Dave Griffiths.
Mike Jones won the yellow jersey (leader) and red jersey (veteran) for the South Staffordshire and Shropshire Cycling Clubs Road Racing League (SSSCCRRL). His son Elliot Jones came third in the league. Both Mr Williams and Mr Wilkinson moved up a category from third to second category, while Mike Jones moved from second category to first category.
A founder member of Paramount CRT, Mr Jones praised the younger cyclists in the team. “They learnt a lot from their first season of racing in a team. There’s been ups and downs but it’s been a lot of fun, especially riding with other teams in the West Midlands.â€Â Mike Jones said the aim was now to prepare for next season.
He said: “We have lots of plans for next year. It’s a lot of training throughout the winter now and through the cold months in preparation for the next season, which begins in March.â€
Ben Lawrence, managing director of insurance broker Beaumont Lawrence and Co, which sponsors the team, and the racing team manager, said he was very proud of the team.
He said: “This was the first season and to come top in the West Midlands is a huge achievement.
“We wanted to pick the best young riders we could and create an elite team, which we have done, and the experience they have all gained from the season will only lead to even better achievements next year.
“The whole team has really enjoyed cycling with other clubs this season and has learnt a lot from all the different races they have taken part in.â€
